Bucknell Field Hockey Collects Several NFHCA Honors

LEWISBURG, Pa. – Four months removed from its season, Bucknell field hockey is still collecting honors. Eight Bison were recognized by the 2012 Gladiator by SGI/NFHCA Division I National Academic Squad and Abby Watson added her name to the Division I Scholars of Distinction list last week. As a unit, Bucknell was also cited with a national Academic Team Award by the National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA).
Watson was one of 71 players nationwide, and five in the Patriot League, to be named a 2012 Gladiator by SGI/NFHCA Division I Scholar of Distinction. To be eligible, student-athletes must achieve a cumulative grade-point average of 3.90 or higher during the first semester of the 2012-13 academic year. Watson registered a perfect 4.0 GPA while majoring in civil engineering.
Also earning recognition last week were a total of eight Bison who were named to the National Academic Squad, which includes student-athletes with a cumulative GPA of 3.30 or higher. Among them was Tayler Siegrist (Madison, N.J./Madison), the team's lone four-year honoree. It is not the first academic accolade for the senior this season. Siegrist was also the Patriot League Field Hockey Scholar-Athlete of the Year in the fall.
Bucknell earned yet another spot as one of the top teams in the country in terms of academic performance. The Bison were one of 63 squads to earn the Division I National Academic Team Award. The Orange & Blue finished the 2012 fall semester with a 3.36 GPA.
Bucknell finished its 2012 season with a 9-10 record overall and a 3-2 mark in conference play. The Bison placed five players on All-Patriot League teams, two on the All-Patriot League Tournament Team, three on the Academic All-Patriot League Team and 10 more on the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll, highlighting their success on and off the field.
