Bucknell Women's Tennis Falls 5-2 to LIU Brooklyn in Puerto Rico

HUMACAO, PUERTO RICO – Maria Cioffi won her second straight singles match and improved her season total to 16 victories and Lydia Colvin added another win, but Bucknell women's tennis fell 5-2 to LIU Brooklyn in Humacao, Puerto Rico on Monday morning. The Bison (2-5) continue Spring Break action tomorrow against Old Dominion at 1 p.m.
Cioffi continued to lead Bucknell with her three-set win over the Blackbirds' Taysha Blessington at No. 2 singles on Monday. The Bison freshman won the opening set 6-4 before Blessington evened it up with a 6-2 decision in the second. Cioffi regained momentum for the 6-4 win and improved her season record to 16-6.
Colvin also needed three sets to earn her win over Lisa Maas at the No. 3 spot in the lineup. Unlike her teammate, however, Colvin had an early deficit to come back from. After falling in the first set 6-2, the Bucknell sophomore bounced back for the ultimate 6-3, 6-4 win.
Two other matches went down to the wire, but each went the way of LIU Brooklyn. The Blackbirds took wins at No.1 and No. 6 singles although Bucknell challenged them all the way. Sanne Louwers went to 7-5, 7-5 before defeating Elena Vidrascu, while Brittany Thompson needed three sets to beat Ellie Fraser. Fraser's match at the No. 6 position was as lopsided as could be with Thompson winning 1-6, 6-2, 6-0.
LIU Brooklyn swept doubles play, winning all three matches by a score of 8-3.
Bucknell has two matches remaining in Puerto Rico. The Bison face Old Dominion tomorrow, followed by Minnesota State on Thursday.
