CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Harvard's Brandon Kregel led off the bottom of the 10th inning with a triple and later scored on a two-out single up the middle by Robert Wineski as the Bucknell baseball team fell to the Crimson by a 2-1 score Friday afternoon at Davenport Field. It was the first of four games the Bison will play this weekend against Harvard and host Virginia.
Sophomore righty Bryson Hough put together a solid start for Bucknell (0-7) as he logged 7.0 innings and was touched for just six hits and one run. He departed with the score knotted at 1-1.
Marcus Garone relieved Hough. He worked out of a two-out, first-and-second situation in the eighth and then retired the Crimson in order in the bottom of the ninth to send the game to extra innings.
Xavier Hammond (0-1) came on in the 10th and yielded the leadoff triple to Kregel, who was one of two Crimson players with two hits. Hammond then struck out cleanup hitter Nick Saathoff for the first out. An intentional walk to Ethan Ferreira set up a potential double play. Ferreira moved to second on a grounder to short by DJ Link that was the second out of the frame. However, Wineski, who had singled in his last at bat, ended the game with his run-scoring single up the middle.
Bucknell posted five hits in the contest, but it was a sac fly that scored the team's only run in the top of the eighth inning. Travis Clark led off the inning by reaching on a throwing error. Carter Bumgardner followed with a single to put runners on first and second. A sac bunt by Joe Ogren moved both Clark and Bumgarnder into scoring position. Rob Krentzman followed with a sac fly to tie the score.
The Bison had at least two runners on base in five of the 10 innings as they drew three walks, one hit by pitch and benefitted from three errors by Harvard (1-0). Bucknell left the bases loaded in the sixth and had two on and one out in the top of the 10th.
Baron Davis (1-0) earned the win for the Crimson. He pitched the final 4.1 innings and allowed two hits and just the unearned run in the eighth.
Harvard initially got on the scoreboard in the sixth inning when Ferreira doubled to right, scoring Kregel, who had led off the frame with a single.
Bucknell will be back in action Saturday at Davenport Field against host Virginia. The Cavaliers are ranked 19th nationally in the latest USA Today Coaches Poll.
