CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Bucknell freshman catcher Jon Mayer keyed a three-run fourth inning with a two-run double, but No. 19 Virginia scored in six of its eight offensive innings to defeat the Bison baseball team 12-4 Saturday afternoon at Davenport Field. Seven different Bison had a hit in the game, led by extra-base hits from Mayer and Corey Furman.
Virginia (10-0) scored its 12 runs on 15 hits. Branden Cogswell, Colin Harrington and Derek Fisher posted three hits apiece, while Harrington, Joe McCarthy and Kenny Towns drove in two runs apiece. The Cavaliers sent nine hitters to the plate in the first inning and scored four runs and tacked on three more in the sixth when eight hitters batted.
Bucknell (0-8) trailed just 6-4 after tallying three runs in the top of the fourth. The Bison had four of their seven hits in the frame. Travis Clark led off with a single and was erased on a double play. Rob Krentzman and Brett Ashley then posted back-to-back singles, setting up Mayer's two-run double, his first career RBIs. Mayer later scored on an error by third baseman Nick Howard off the bat of Scott Glass.
Bucknell's other run came in the third inning when Furman reached on a one-out triple to right center. He then scored on a ground out by Greg Wasikowski.
Virginia pitchers Scott Silverstein (7.0 IP, 7 H, 4 R, 5 K), who improved to 2-0 on the season, and David Rosenberger (2.0 IP, 0 H, 0R, 2 K) limited the Bison to just one baserunner over the final five innings. That duo retired the final 12 Bucknell hitters in order.
Dan Weigel (0-3) started on the mound for the Bison and pitched to four hitters in the sixth inning before departing in favor of freshman Andrew Andreychik. Weigel was charged with nine runs and 11 hits, while Andreychik yielded four hits and three runs, only two of which were earned, in his three innings of work.
Bucknell will wrap up its four-game weekend in Charlottesville with a doubleheader on Sunday. The Bison will face Harvard at 11 a.m. and then Virginia at 2:30 p.m.
