LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell head football coach Joe Susan on Wednesday announced Bucknell's latest recruiting class. The 18-person class features players from nine different states, including six who hail from Pennsylvania. The group includes 10 players expected to play on the offensive side of the ball, while seven are projected to join the defensive unit. Additionally, one kicker is part of the class.
"I am excited about the young men who have decided to become members of the Bucknell Family," said Susan, who will enter his fourth year at the helm of the Bison next fall. "The efforts of our staff and the admissions and financial aid offices have made this class possible.
"We have created a class of student-athletes who will excel both on and off the field. They will benefit from their experience at Bucknell. They will impact this place as leaders on campus. I am excited to welcome them to Bucknell. We addressed specific position needs in this recruiting class. The development of these young men will be critical to the progression of our program."
Last February the Patriot League approved a policy allowing athletic merit aid in the sport of football and this class represents Bucknell's first with the ability to attract student-athletes with those merit aid scholarships.
"The decision of the Patriot League to offer merit aid scholarships made recruiting different in that it simplified the process for certain families," explained Susan. "Our ability to attract the best and the brightest has always been the focal point of our recruiting and that continued this year. The challenge of recruiting young men who can balance the requirements of a rigorous undergraduate education with playing Division I football is what is rewarding about this process.
"A benefit in being able to create and finish a class is that we can spend more time focused on the young men on campus and their development. We are aware of the challenge that the quality of the Patriot League confronts us with and will continue to work to be the very best we can be."
Bucknell and the other six football-playing members of the Patriot League are permitted to award up to the equivalent of 15 athletic financial aid awards each year. The total amount of all countable financial aid awarded to football student-athletes may not exceed 60 equivalencies in any given year.
This year's recruiting class will be joining a Bison squad that returns 16 starters from 2012. The Bison also return five All-Patriot League players.
