LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell defenseman Mike Huffner (Elmira, N.Y./Notre Dame) has been selected from a national pool as one of 20 finalists for the 2013 Senior CLASS Award for men's lacrosse. The award recognizes outstanding student-athletes that have notable achievements in four areas of excellence: community, classroom, character and competition.
Huffner is considered one of the nation's top senior defensemen this spring. He was picked as the Patriot League Preseason Defensive Player of the Year, and he has been a First Team All-Patriot League honoree in each of the last two years.
A biology major and Dean's List student with medical school aspirations, Huffner last season was named to both the Capital One Academic All-America Team and the Patriot League Men's Lacrosse All-Academic Team.
Huffner has volunteered and interned at the Arnot Ogden Medical Center in his hometown of Elmira, and last summer he conducted research with a Bucknell professor while shadowing doctors at Evangelical Community Hospital in Lewisburg. Huffner is a member of Colleges Against Cancer, and he has served as president of Bison Pals, a mentor program for adults with special needs.
An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School®, the Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities.
Huffner is one of four Patriot League student-athletes to make the final 20, joining Colgate's Peter Baum, Army's Brendan Buckley and Lehigh's Ryan Snyder.
The candidate class will be narrowed to 10 finalists midway through the regular season, and those names will be placed on the official ballot. Ballots will be distributed through a nationwide voting system to media, coaches and fans, who will select one finalist who best exemplifies excellence in the four Cs of community, classroom, character and competition. The Senior CLASS Award winner will be announced during the 2013 NCAA Lacrosse Championships in Philadelphia May 25-27.
