EMMITSBURG, Md. -- Two late goals from Andrew Scalley and Cody Lehrer helped Mount St. Mary's rally past 18th-ranked Bucknell on Saturday at cold, and at times snowy, Waldron Family Stadium. Todd Heritage scored four times for the Bison, who fell to 1-1 on the season.
Chase Bailey and Sean Doyle both recorded two goals and an assist, while Peter Burke also scored twice for the Bison, who are now 14-1 all-time against Mount St. Mary's (1-1). Lehrer scored four times, Scalley had three goals and five assists, and Brett Schmidt two goals and five assists for the Mountaineers, the No. 2 pick in the Northeast Conference preseason poll.
For the second time in as many games, Bucknell scored right off the opening faceoff. This time it was Heritage scoring just six seconds into the contest. It was 3-3 after a fast-paced first quarter, but Bucknell outscored Mount St. Mary's 4-1 in the second to take a 7-4 haltime lead.
The Mountaineers got right back into it after halftime. They won the first three faceoffs of the third quarter and scored on all three to tie it up at 7-7 just 4:03 into the period. Lehrer's goal off a Scalley feed put Mount St. Mary's ahead 8-7 with 3:46 left in the third. Heritage ended the run when he finished a Bailey feed from close range, but Schmidt's EMO tally made it 9-8 Mount after three quarters.
The Mountaineers took their first two-goal lead of the day when Scalley scored 1:52 into the fourth quarter, but the Bison jumped back in front with three straight goals.
Burke picked off a pass in his own half of the field on a clearing attempt and sprinted all the way in for a breakaway goal to make it 10-9, and less than two minutes later Heritage scored off a Dickson feed to tie it at 10.
With 3:45 to play Bucknell went back in front when Bailey popped in a rebound. Eric Monfort won the ensuing faceoff, but the Bison turned it over on the end line. With about two minutes to play Bucknell took the ball away but a player lost his footing near midfield. That led to a fastbreak for Mount St. Mary's, and Schmidt passed to Scalley for the tying goal.
The Mount won the next faceoff and scored quickly, with Lehrer finishing from close range after a pass from Scalley with 1:20 to play. Mount St. Mary's won another draw and was able to drain the clock inside 30 seconds. Jackson Place checked the ball loose, and goalie Kyle Feeney ran it out all the way into the Mount box. He dished to Burke, whose shot from the left side skipped wide with 4.8 seconds left. After the restart the Bison got another look, but Dickson's shot was off the mark as time expired.
Bucknell finished with a 39-26 shot advantage and led 26-23 in ground balls. The Bison committed only nine turnovers, compared to 16 for Mount St. Mary's, but the Mount had the advantage in faceoffs, winning 15 of 25, including 9 of 13 in the second half.
