LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Bucknell women's lacrosse team opened up its 2013 season Saturday afternoon at Graham Field against No. 18 Stony Brook and fell by a 20-5 score. Demmianne Cook netted a team-high seven goals for the Seawolves, who returned all 12 of their starters from a team that was 14-5 a year ago.
America East Player of the Year and All-American Claire Petersen added four goals and six assists for Stony Brook (1-0), which outshot the Bison 44-17 overall and 28-6 in the first half.
Bucknell's (0-1) offense was spread around as five different Bison scored goals. Emily Kookogey, Cori Thielemann, Sam Rickels, Emily Becker and Katelyn Miller each found the back of the net once. Three of Bucknell's goals came on free position shots.
Sophomore Caroline O'Neill made the start in goal for the Bison and recorded 10 saves in the contest that featured running clock throughout much of the second half.
Bucknell trailed 6-1 early, but goals by Thielemann and Becker brought them to within 7-3 with just over five minutes to play in the first half. Stony Brook proceeded to score the final five goals of the first half and the first seven of the second half.
Bucknell's early season schedule doesn't get any easier as it is scheduled to play its next six games on the road. The Bison will play at nationally ranked Penn State (Wednesday) and Johns Hopkins (next Saturday) in the next week.
