LEWISBURG, Pa. – The Bucknell men's soccer team won two critical Patriot League games last week, scoring six goals in the process, and has locked up a postseason tournament berth with one round of regular-season play still to come. Based on that success, sophomores Mike Lansing (Randolph, N.J./Randolph) and Jesse Klug (Sammamish, Wash./Overlake School) received honors on Monday. Lansing was named Brine Patriot League Goalkeeper of the Week, while Klug was selected as the Bison Athlete of the Week.
Last Wednesday, the Bison topped Lafayette 3-0 on the road. Klug had a hand in all three goals, scoring once and assisting on two others. He made a perfect pass to Josh Butzke for the opening goal in the 27th minute, then he scored one of his own in the 50th when he slotted in a nice feed from Mark Leibensperger. Klug later assisted on Jonathan Grad's goal that clinched the match.
Lansing made four saves against the Leopards en route to his seventh shutout of the season. That includes a terrific stop on a hard shot by Ryan Dodds late in the first half with the Bison leading 1-0.
On Senior Day at Emmitt Field on Saturday, Bucknell scored the game's first three goals and defeated Holy Cross 3-1. Klug's 81st-minute goal iced the game, and Lansing played 88 minutes without allowing a goal (he was not on the field when the Crusaders scored in the 86th minute). Among Lansing's four saves in that one were two diving stops in the first half when the game was still very much up for grabs.
Lansing's seven shutouts are tied for 10th-most on Bucknell's single-season list, and his 12 career clean sheets rank seventh in program history. He lowered his season goals-against average to 0.77
Klug leads the Bison in goals (9), assists (3) and points (21) through 16 games. Back in September he had a streak of four straight games with a goal, and he is currently riding a streak of three straight with a goal and four in a row with a point. Klug's 68 shot attempts leads the Patriot League, and he ranks second in the league in goals and points.
Bucknell is 10-5-1 overall and has reach double digits in the win column for the 13th time in program history. The Bison have a non-conference game on Tuesday night at Hartwick, and then they close out the regular season on Saturday at 2 p.m. at Boston University. Bucknell has clinched one of the six Patriot League Tournament berths, and it has a chance to host a quarterfinal game on Sept. 12 if it can finish third or fourth in the standings.
The Bison are currently solo fourth at 4-3-1 (13 points), while Holy Cross is two points ahead at 5-3-0. Navy and Army have clinched the top two seeds. American (3-3-2, 11 points), Colgate (3-4-1, 10), Boston University (3-5-0, 9) and Lafayette (2-4-2, 8) are all vying for the final two spots.
Hartwick is 5-7-4 overall and 3-2-1 in the Mid-American Conference. The Hawks locked up a MAC Tournament bid with a 2-1 win over Northern Illinois on Saturday. Hartwick defeated Bucknell 1-0 at Emmitt Field last season.
Hartwick will offer a video webcast and live stats for Tuesday night's game.
