LEWISBURG, Pa. – Junior DL Demetrius Baldwin-Youngblood (Rankin, Pa./The Linsly School (W. Va.)) and senior P/PR/WR Kyle Sullivan (Wilmington, Del./St. Mark's) helped the Bucknell football team to its fourth win in its last five games on Saturday against Georgetown and on Monday they were honored with weekly awards from the Patriot League. Baldwin-Youngblood was named the league's Defensive Player of the Week for the first time in his career, while Sullivan copped Special Teams Player of the Week honors for the third time this fall.
Baldwin-Youngblood tied for the team lead with eight tackles against the Hoyas and his three sacks and three tackles for loss were both career highs. The three sacks were the most by a Bison since Robert De La Rosa had three in 2011, also against Georgetown.
Baldwin-Youngblood ranks 50th nationally in sacks per game (0.6) and his six sacks this season rank second in the Patriot League to teammate Matt Johnson's seven. A starter at both defensive tackle and defensive end this season, Baldwin-Youngblood has set career highs in tackles (40), tackles for loss (8.5), sacks (6) and pass breakups (2).
Thanks in part to Baldwin-Youngblood, the Bison defense limited Georgetown to a season-low-tying seven points on Saturday. The Bison yielded just 171 yards of total offense, including 22 on the ground.
The versatile Sullivan once again was all over the field on Saturday, playing at punter, punt returner, wide receiver and holder. Four of his five punts landed inside the Georgetown 20-yard line and his longest boot went for 47 yards. On the other side of the field, Sullivan returned one punt for 31 yards, his second-best return this season. It set up Bucknell's second touchdown of the game.
Sullivan was also involved in setting up the first score of the game for the Bison as his career-best 26-yard reception in traffic moved Bucknell to the Georgetown five-yard line. Three plays later the Bison got on the board on a short touchdown pass from Brandon Wesley to Josh Brake.
Sullivan this season is averaging 37.3 yards on 58 punts, has 11 receptions for 107 yards and ranks 10th nationally in punt returns (11.7 yds/ret.).
Baldwin-Youngblood is the second Bison to be named PL Defensive Player of the Week this season, following Matthew Steinbeck (Oct. 28). Sullivan and K Derek Maurer have combined for four Special Teams awards.
Bucknell (5-5, 3-2 PL) will wrap up its 2013 season this Saturday at VMI. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. The two teams have not met since 1978.
