LEWISBURG, Pa. – Bucknell senior Mike Nicholson (Chappaqua, N.Y./Horace Greeley) was named the Patriot League Male Swimmer of the Week, the league office announced on Monday. Nicholson posted a team-high three first-place finishes in Saturday's season-opening non-scored meet against UMBC.
Nicholson earned his 12th career Patriot League Swimmer of the Week honor, putting him two shy of equaling Navy's Adam Myer's career standard.
A three-time First Team All-Patriot League selection who holds school records in four individual events, Nicholson captured all three butterfly events against UMBC, winning the 50, 100 and 200. Teammate Erik Heinemann was the runner-up in all three. Nicholson won the 200 in 1:51.39, 3.30 seconds ahead of Heinemann. No other swimmer touched the wall in under 1:59.00.
Nicholson, who swam the third leg of the second-place 200 medley relay, nosed out Heinemann by three-tenths of a second in the 100, and then that duo went 1-2 in the 50.
At last year's season-opening UMBC meet, Nicholson won the 200 and 400 IM and finished second in the 100 IM.
The Bison will return to the pool Oct. 19 at George Washington in their first scored meet of the 2013-14 campaign.
