LEWISBURG, Pa. – Bucknell senior Mayowa Alli (Lanham, Md./Bishop McNamara) was named Brine Patriot League Defensive Player of the Week and Bucknell Athlete of the Week on Monday after playing a prominent role in the men's soccer team's 3-0 victory at Lehigh on Saturday. Alli anchored the defense in the team's fifth shutout of the season, and he also scored a goal in the opening minutes of the game.
The contest was only 8:37 old when Alli soared toward the back post to head home Josh Butzke's corner kick. Alli is known for his prowess in the air, and Saturday's goal was his first of the season and 13th of his career. It held up as the game-winner, as Connor Willings and Chris Thorsheim tacked on goals later in the night.
Defensively, Alli and the Bison limited Lehigh to only eight total shots and just four on goal. It was the team's fifth clean sheet in nine games this season. Since a 3-2 loss to Canisius in the season opener, the Bison have conceded only four goals in the last eight matches.
This is Alli's third Patriot League Defensive Player of the Week honor this season and fifth of his career. He also has three career Offensive Player of the Week awards. Alli was the Patriot League Rookie of the Year in 2010, a First Team All-Patriot League defender in 2011 and a Preseason All-Patriot League pick this season. Alli has played every minute of every game this season.
Bucknell is now 6-3 overall, 4-0 on the road and 1-1 in Patriot League play this season. The Bison host Loyola Maryland in another key Patriot League matchup on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
