LEWISBURG, Pa. -- This Saturday will be a bit of a whirlwind day for senior Joe Meyer, the starting right fullback for the Bucknell men's soccer team. His afternoon will begin with Senior Day ceremonies at Emmitt Field, where his family will join those of classmates Mayowa Alli, Orman Kimbrough and Josh Butzke. Soon after the seniors are recognized, Meyer and the Bison will take on a very good Holy Cross side with Patriot League Tournament positioning on the line. When the match reaches full time, Meyer will hustle into a car headed for New York City, where he and fellow Bucknell student Erica Gaugler '15 are set to receive NYC Post Society of Military Engineers Scholarship Awards at that organization's 73rd Annual Dinner Dance at the Waldorf Astoria.
In addition to being a standout on the soccer field, Meyer is a mechanical engineering major with a 3.93 cumulative grade-point average, which is one of the highest of any Bison student-athlete. Last year he was named to the 11-man Patriot League Men's Soccer All-Academic Team, and he went on to become the eighth Bucknell men's soccer student-athlete to earn national Capital One Academic All-America honors.
Meyer took his first step to becoming an Academic All-America candidate once again in 2013 when he was named to the Academic All-District II Team on Thursday afternoon. Meyer was one of 12 student-athletes named to the District II squad and one of five from the Patriot League. Those 12 student-athletes move on to the national ballot.
According to its website, The Society of American Military Engineers (SAME) is the premier professional military engineering association in the United States. It unites architecture, engineering, construction, facility management and environmental entities and individuals in the public and private sectors to prepare for—and overcome—natural and manmade disasters, and to improve security at home and abroad. Each year, SAME presents awards to individuals and organizations from the uniformed services and the private sector in recognition of achievement in support of the engineering profession.
On the field, Meyer has enjoyed a terrific senior season on the Bison back line. He has played 1,379 of a possible 1,387 minutes at right back, fortifying a Bucknell defense that has recorded eight shutouts and a 0.78 team goals-against average. Meyer also has a goal and an assist this season, both coming in a 2-0 shutout of Loyola on Oct. 9.
Bucknell is 9-5-1 overall and 3-3-1 in the Patriot League following Wednesday's 3-0 victory at Lafayette. The Bison are in sole possession of fourth place in the Patriot League and can clinich a playoff berth on Saturday with a win over Holy Cross and losses or ties by Colgate and Lafayette.
