LEWISBURG, Pa. – Team Keller's Brett Smith was 3-for-7 with three runs scored and a pair of RBIs over the final two games of Bucknell Baseball's Fall World Series to help his squad come back from a 2-1 deficit and defeat Team Krentzman 3-2 in the best-of-five series.
Team Keller evened the series at 2-2 last Tuesday with a 5-2 five-inning victory over Team Krentzman. Team Keller plated three runs in the bottom of the first and then two more in the top of the fourth on a single by Smith. Bryson Hough allowed four hits and struck out three in 4.0 innings to earn the win, while Mike Castellani got out of a bases-loaded jam in the top of the fifth to earn the save.
Team Krentzman's runs came on an RBI double by Anthony Gingerelli and an RBI single by Danny Rafferty in the top of the fourth.
A total of nine pitchers were used by both teams in the deciding game five late last week as Team Keller scored single runs in the fourth, sixth and eighth innings to win the game 3-2 and claim the series title.
Smith tripled and later scored on a wild pitch to get Team Keller on the board first. He then led off the sixth inning with a single and scored on Justin Meier's two-out triple. Meier scored what proved to be the winning run in the eighth inning when he singled and then scored on Luke Lombardi's two-out triple.
Jonathan Lucas earned the win for Team Keller, allowing just three hits and striking out four in 5.0 innings. Team Keller's bullpen of Tommy Gambon, Max Kra, Mike Castellani and Tom Hrabchak yielded just one hit and struck out four over the final four innings. Hrabchak retired the only hitter he faced in the ninth inning to earn the save.
An RBI single by Brett Ashley in the fifth and a wild pitch that allowed Corey Furman to score in the ninth was how Team Krentzman got on the board. Andrew Andreychik allowed four hits and struck out four in 5.0 innings, while Rafferty, Jack Schoenberger and Tucker Rekucki pitched in relief.
Smith finished the Fall World Series with a .500 batting average (6-for-12) to lead Team Keller. Meier hit .353 (6-for-17) with three RBIs.
Furman's .571 (8-for-14) average led Team Krentzman.
Nine of the 12 pitchers that saw action in the Fall World Series finished with ERAs below 4.00, including Castellani, Gambon and Rafferty, who did not allow an earned run. Rekucki earned both wins for Team Krentzman, while Castellani, Lucas and Hough won games for Team Keller.
