LEWISBURG, Pa. – Second-year Bucknell baseball head coach Scott Heather has relinquished his coaching duties this week. As is tradition, the Bison are in the midst of the team's annual Fall World Series, which features a draft followed by a best-of-five intrasquad series. Injured players are acting as the coaches with Team Rob Krentzman facing off against Team Dan Keller.
Team Krentzman won Sunday's game three by a 3-2 score in extra innings to take a 2-1 series lead. Game four is scheduled for Tuesday afternoon at Depew Field.
The two teams have been evenly matched as the largest margin of victory for either side was a 2-0 Team Keller win in game two.
Team Krentzman won game one 4-3 last Thursday behind solid pitching performances by Xavier Hammond (5.0 IP, 5 H, 1 K) and Tucker Rekucki (2.0 IP, 1 H, 1 K). That duo allowed just six hits and three runs to outduel Team Keller's Bryson Hough, who also recorded a complete game while striking out five and walking none.
Team Keller scored two runs in the fourth on an RBI single by Carter Austin and a passed ball. Team Krentzman held a 3-2 lead entering the bottom of the sixth inning, but Team Keller plated two more runs, the last of which was unearned. Corey Furman completed a 3-for-3 day with an RBI single to tie the score and later scored what proved to be the winning run on an error.
Saturday's game two featured more solid pitching as Team Keller hurlers Jonathan Lucas and Mike Castellani combined on a two-hit shutout. Castellani did not yield a hit in his 3.2 innings of relief. Team Krentzman starter Andrew Andreychik was solid as well, allowing just two hits and one run over 4.1 innings.
Team Keller, which was limited to three hits in the contest, broke the scoreless tie in the fourth inning when Joe Ogren and Justin Meier led off the frame with back-to-back singles. Luke Lombardi loaded the bases when he was hit by a pitch. Ogren then scored on a fielder's choice off the bat of Alex O'Neill. Lombardi was hit by a pitch again in the sixth and later scored on a two-out single by Jake Archey.
Team Krentzman took the early lead in Sunday's contest, scoring twice in the bottom of the first when leadoff hitter Ryan Otis walked and Furman followed with the only home run hit by either team so far.
Team Keller answered with two runs in the top of the third when Ogren drew a leadoff walk and then scored on a Meier double. Sam Clark followed immediately with an RBI single to even the score.
It remained 2-2 heading into extra innings. Rekucki retired the first two Team Keller hitters in the top of the eighth before issuing a two-out walk to Lombardi. Rekucki, who earned the win by pitching 2.2 hitless innings, got a ground ball from O'Neill to end the frame.
Furman, who is hitting .667 (6-for-9) with four runs scored and two RBIs in the series, led off the bottom of the eighth with a triple. Tom Hrabchak retired the next two hitters, but issued an intentional walk to Anthony Gingerelli and then hit Brett Ashley with a pitch to load the bases. Greg Wasikowski came to the plate and his single drove home Furman and moved Team Krentzman to within one win of clinching the series.
Furman leads both team in hitting and he owns an impressive .700 on-base percentage. Austin, who is 2-for-8, has combined with Furman for more than half of Team Krentzman's 15 hits.
Brett Smith is hitting .600 (3-for-5) to lead Team Keller at the plate. Ogren (2-for-5), O'Neill (3-for-8) and Lombardi (2-for-6) are also hitting above .300.
The two squads have combined to draw 18 walks and six hit by pitches.
Both teams have used six pitchers and only Rekucki has appeared in more than one game. Team Keller's Castellani (3.2 IP), Lucas (3.1 IP) and Tommy Gambon (1.1 IP) have 0.00 ERAs, while Team Krentman's Danny Rafferty (2.1 IP) has not allowed an earned run.
The Bucknell baseball team serves as the Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium cleanup crew after home football games. The losing team in the Fall World Series will be responsible for filling that role for an upcoming game.
