Three Bison Earn Patriot League Swimming and Diving Weekly Awards

LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Bucknell swimming and diving programs earned a season-high three weekly awards on Monday following a Saturday dual meet at Columbia. The Bison swept the women's awards with sophomore Katie Hetherington (Houston, Texas/Duchesne Academy of the Sacred Heart) earning Female Diver of the Week honors, while classmate Lauren Perry (Syracuse, N.Y./Westhill) was named Female Swimmer of the Week. On the men's side, junior Mike Nicholson (Chappaqua, N.Y./Horace Greeley) was named Swimmer of the Week for the third time this season and the ninth time in his career.
Hetherington's honor was her third this year and the seventh of her two-year career. She had a solid outing against the Lions, winning the one-meter board and finishing sixth off the three-meter. Hetherington's winning score of 245.40 off the one-meter was her second-highest tally of the season as she won the event for the third time this year.
Perry earned her first career weekly honor from the Patriot League after three individual runner-up finishes against Columbia. The 2012 First Team All-Patriot League selection was the runner-up in the 50 free, 100 free and 200 free. She touched the wall in the 200 free 2.91 seconds ahead of the third-place finisher. Additionally, Perry swam the second leg on the 800 free relay that placed second.
Nicholson was one of two Bison along with Ben Seketa to win a pair of events opposite the Lions, claiming first in the 200 fly and 200 IM. The two-time First Team All-Patriot League selection also took second in the 100 fly as he was Bucknell's top finisher in three events. Nicholson has finished first or second in 23 of 26 races this season.
Bucknell's men (4-3) lost to Columbia by a 209-91 score, while the Bison women (3-4) dropped a 190.5-108.5 decision to the Lions.
Bucknell will return home this weekend with a pair of meets against Patriot League opponents. The Bison will host Colgate at 10 a.m. on Friday, Jan. 11, and then jump in the pool about 24 hours later to face Army on Saturday, Jan. 12, at 1 p.m.
