LEWISBURG, Pa. - Junior Kelly Pontecorvo won both distance freestyle events and freshman Emma Levendoski took first and second in the backstrokes, but the Bucknell women's swimming and diving team lost a close meet to Colgate 161-139 on Friday at Kinney Natatorium.
Colgate finished second at last year's Patriot League Championships with the Bison just behind in third place, so it figured to be a tight meet. In only one event all day - Colgate in the 100-yard butterfly -- did either team sweep the top two places.
The Raiders started the day with a win in the 200 medley relay, but the first individual event went to Pontecorvo, who won by 5.76 seconds in the 1,000 free. Pontecorvo touched first in 10:16.15, and she came back later in the day to win the 500 free in 5:03.02. She has now won the 1,000 in four of her five races this season, and it was her fifth win in nine tries in the 500.
Levendoski continued her outstanding rookie year with her fifth win of the campaign in the 100 back. Her time of 57.46 was a half-second better than Colgate's Lia Kunnapas, who was the Patriot League champion in the 200 back last year. Kunnapas did win the 200 later in the meet, with Levendoski second in 2:06.80.
Lauren Perry (100 free, 200 free) and Emily Norton (100 breast, 200 breast) both had a pair of runner-up finishes for the Bison.
Bucknell finished the meet in strong fashion, winning the 400 free relay in 3:33.84, behind Perry, Kaitlyn Utkewicz, Emily Wright and Liz Porcellio.
The Bison will be right back in action at home on Saturday, taking on Army at 1 p.m. at Kinney Natatorium.
