Bucknell Field Hockey Blanked by Columbia on the Road, 2-0
9/8/2012 8:00:00 AM | Field Hockey
NEW YORK - Unlike its recent win over Cornell, Bucknell field hockey was unable to pull off a comeback against the Ivy League, falling 2-0 at Columbia on Saturday afternoon. The Lions scored early in each half to claim their first win of the season while the Bison fell to 3-2 on the year.
Bucknell and Columbia were evenly matched in everything but the score on Saturday. The Lions had a 14-11 edge in shots, but the Bison led 7-5 in penalty corners. Even saves were close as Erica Perrine (Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan) finished with five in goal for Bucknell and Cornell's Christie O'Hara registered six.
Columbia was able to strike first where it really counted, however, scoring just 1:06 into the start of the game. Anna Scipioni scored on an assist from Paige Simmons. It was then nearly 40 minutes before the ball found the back of the net again as Gabby Kozlowski, who led Columbia in scoring a year ago, scored her second goal of the season to put the Lions in front by the final score of 2-0.
Saturday's two-goal differential was the largest in a meeting between Bucknell and Columbia since 2000 when the Lions took a 3-1 victory. Before today, each of the previous four meetings had been decided by a single score with three of those contests going into overtime and one of those being decided in a strokeoff.
With her five saves against Columbia, Perrine (3-2) now has 128 for her career. That places her within nine saves of moving into 11th place all-time at Bucknell. She is currently tied for 11th in career wins with 10.
Bucknell will be back in action tomorrow when it hosts Saint Francis (Pa.) at 2 p.m. at Graham Field. The Bison are 8-0 all-time against the Red Flash. Live stats on GameTracker will be available at BucknellBison.com.
