Bison Women's Tennis' Vidrascu Wins Three to Open Bucknell Quad

LEWISBURG, Pa. – Elena Vidrascu, Maria Cioffi and Stephanie Pino led Bison women's tennis on day one of the Bucknell Quad at the Varsity Tennis Courts on Friday as all three advanced to the doubles semifinals and won their first-round singles matches. With two days left to play, the Bison have already collected eight total victories to open their 2012-13 campaign.
The only Bison to earn three wins on the first day of competition was junior co-captain Vidrascu. Partnering with Lydia Colvin, she helped defeat Laura Husband and Danielle Falo of Saint Francis (Pa.) quickly, 8-0. The Bison duo's quarterfinal match was slightly trickier, going to a tiebreaker. Colvin and Vidrascu eventually came out on top, 9-8, over Katie Eaton and Erika Schnaas of Indiana (Pa.) after a Bucknell volley at the net dropped just out of their opponent's reach to end the match.
Vidrascu and Colvin were also tested on the singles court in Flight A, but only Vidrascu was able to come away with the win. Vidrascu defeated Loyola's Haleigh Morgus 7-5, 2-6 (10-6). Colvin also was pushed to a super tiebreaker. The Bison won the first set over Loyola's Emily Hughes 6-2, but Hughes took the second set 7-6. Colvin then fell short in the end, 10-7.
The next doubles opponent on tap for Vidrascu and Colvin will be none other than teammates Cioffi and Stephanie Pino. The freshman duo received a first-round bye, then defeated Saint Francis' Lucy Jasso and Rafael Panizza, 8-6.
Cioffi and Pino advanced individually as well. Playing in Flight A, Cioffi was a 6-1, 3-6 (10-3) winner over Shivani Patel from Saint Francis. She now has a potential matchup with Vidrascu in the quarterfinals.
Pino defeated the Red Flash's Camila Diaz 6-3, 6-3 in Flight B, while Claudia Silvers was a 6-2, 6-3 winner over Gabriella DeCarvalho from Loyola in Flight C.
Play resumes tomorrow morning at the Bucknell Quad and will continue through the finals on Sunday.
