LEWISBURG, Pa. - Sophomore midfielder Courtney Nelson (Phoenix, Ariz./Horizon Community Learning Center) has been named the Susquehanna Valley Limousine Bison Athlete of the Week after scoring goals in both of the Bucknell women's soccer team's victories last week. Nelson had the lone goal in a 1-0 win over Buffalo on Friday night, and she scored the second goal in a 3-0 road win over St. Bonaventure on Sunday.
Nelson is flourishing in a new position this season. As a freshman a year ago, she was a regular starter on defense and helped contribute to a team that allowed the second-fewest goals (19) in a season in program history. This season Nelson has been moved up to outside midfield, where her speed has made her a menace on the left side of the field.
Nelson had yet to score a goal through 16 games of her collegiate career, but now she has three in her last four games, starting with a tally against No. 23 Rutgers on Aug. 24. On Friday night Bucknell was locked up in a scoreless duel with visiting Buffalo until Nelson flicked in a corner kick at the near post in the 59th minute. On Sunday at St. Bonaventure, Bucknell led 1-0 in the opening minutes of the second half before Nelson finished a cross from Chelsey Garkowski for a big insurance marker.
With her three goals on the season, Nelson leads the team and ranks tied for third in the Patriot League.
She will look to extend her goal-scoring streak when UMBC visits Emmitt Field on Friday at 7 p.m.
