LEWISBURG, Pa. -- Colgate's Catherine Williams scored two second-half goals to counter an Evelyn Nicinski strike for Bucknell, and the Raiders came away with a 4-1 victory over the Bison in the Patriot League openers for both teams Saturday afternoon at Emmitt Field.
The Bison fell to 7-5 on the season, while Colgate, the preseason favorite in the Patriot League, improved to 6-4-2.
It was a wide-open affair with the two teams combining for 41 shots, 24 by Colgate. The Raiders netted the game's first two goals in the opening half-hour. They went up 1-0 on a corner kick scramble in the ninth minute. Bucknell defenders cleared two shots off the line, but Emily Manoogian popped in the second rebound off the left post.
At the 29:41 mark the Raiders went up 2-0 on an own goal. Williams dribbled deep along the right side of the penalty area and tried to square a ball back into the middle, but it caromed in off the body of a retreating defender.
Bucknell came out flying in the second half and put plenty of pressure on the Colgate defense. The Bison were rewarded for their efforts in the 52nd minute when Cassie Denger delivered a deep cross from the right wing, and Nicinski finished with a leaping volley for her second goal of the year.
The Bison kept up the pressure and nearly equalized on a shot by Chelsey Garkowski, but only 4:16 after the Nicinski goal, Colgate was able to counter. Jillian Kinter dribbled in from the right side along the 18 and slipped a pass behind the defense to Williams, who scored from close range.
Williams tacked on her eighth goal of the season just over three minutes later. Sandita McDermott made an initial save on Kinter but the ball trickled across the goal mouth, where Williams tapped it in for a 4-1 lead.
McDermott finished with seven saves, while Colgate's Ashley Walsh (6) and Emma Giegerich (2) combined for eight.
The Bison have a busy week ahead, starting Tuesday night in State College against No. 8 Penn State. Next weekend Bucknell has a pair of Patriot League games against Holy Cross on Friday and Army on Sunday.
