Bucknell Field Hockey Opens Patriot League Action Saturday on Bison Vision vs. Colgate

LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell field hockey will make one more go of it this month on its home turf, hosting Colgate for their Patriot League opener at 11 a.m. on Saturday in a bout that will be broadcast online on Bison Vision. The game caps off a stretch of six straight at friendly Graham Field as the Bison will then hit the road to take on Rutgers at 1 p.m. on Sunday in Piscataway, N.J.
BISON NOTEBOOK
- Bucknell went 0-2 last weekend against a pair of tough foes in No. 17 Michigan and Temple. Even without the wins though, the Bison collected more than one highlight. Among them, Kelsey Mucelli (Kutztown, Pa./Kutztown Area) tied the single-game school record with three assists against Temple. The sophomore is the 10th Bison to have three assists in one contest with the last being Morgan Kauffman against Colgate on Oct. 24, 2009. Kauffman graduated third in program history in career assists (28).
- Bucknell tallied seven assists against Temple, setting a season high and falling two shy of the program single-game record of nine set against Mansfield in 1977. The last time the Bison registered seven assists came against Holy Cross last season. Bucknell defeated the Crusaders 7-0 in that contest.
- Emily Hitchings (Fort Washington, Pa./Upper Dublin) nabbed her first career goal against the Owls. She is the third Bison freshman to score a goal this season, joining Kiersten Sydnor (Shippensburg, Pa./Mercersburg Academy) and Abby Watson (Medford, N.J./Shawnee).
- Tayler Siegrist (Madison, N.J./Madison) recorded her second multi-goal game of the season and the third of her career when she scored twice against Temple last Sunday. The senior also had two goals earlier this fall against Towson, a game in which she ultimately finished with a career-best six points, and at American in the 2011 Patriot League Tournament semifinal.
- Siegrist has tallied three or more points seven times during her career, including twice against Temple. In four games against the Owls, she has amassed nine points (4G, 1 A).
- Bucknell has received good contribution from all its classes this fall. Each class is represented in the team's top four point-scorers, including senior Siegrist (16 points), junior Rachel Misko (Morristown, N.J./Madison) (12), sophomore Amie Pritchard (Rumson, N.J./Kent School (Conn.)) (6) and freshman Sydnor (8).
- In seven home games this season, Bucknell is 4-3 and with 70 percent of the team's contests so far this fall having been played at Graham Field, it's not surprising that the bulk of its stats have been recorded on its own turf. Of Siegrist's team-leading 16 points, 14 (5G, 4A) have come at home, as have 11 of Misko's 12 points. Erica Perrine (Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan) has a 2.13 goals against average, a .688 save percentage and her lone shutout on the season at Graham Field.
- In other home-field advantage stats, Bucknell is leading its opponents in goals (20-15), shots (104-70) and penalty corners (65-25) in games played on its home turf.
- Vickie Resh (Hamburg, Pa./Hamburg Area) will return to the field for the Bison this weekend. The junior missed five games for Bucknell while playing for Team USA at the Junior Pan American Games in Guadalajara, Mexico earlier this month. Resh and her American teammates claimed a berth at the 2013 Junior World Cup by defeating Chile 2-1 in a third-place matchup.
SCOUTING THE RAIDERS
- Colgate and Bucknell will face off in their first game of the Patriot League schedule. The Raiders enter the matchup at 2-7 overall this fall with the team's wins coming over Siena and most recently Saint Joseph's. The Raiders and the Bison have had three common opponents this year in Saint Francis (Pa.), Lock Haven and Temple. Bucknell was 2-1 against those foes, while Colgate went 0-3.
- After going 6-11 overall and 1-4 in the Patriot League last year, Colgate was voted fifth in the 2012 Patriot League Preseason Poll. First Team All-League selection Peyton Hawkins has graduated, but second team honoree Amanda DiDomizio is back for another turn. The sophomore goalkeeper had a 2.47 goals against average and a .760 save percentage a year ago. Those numbers now stand at 3.61 and .732 in the new campaign.
- Bucknell leads 25-10-3 in the all-time series with Colgate. The Bison have won each of the last four meetings and 10 of the last 11. When playing in Lewisburg, the record is even more in Bucknell's favor at 13-4-1. The last loss to the Raiders at home came in 2000, ending in overtime 3-2.
- Bucknell defeated Colgate 1-0 in double overtime in Hamilton, N.Y., last fall. Mallory Smith netted the game-winning goal 1:54 into the second extra period to help the Bison clinch a Patriot League Tournament berth. Perrine finished with five saves in the shutout, while DiDomizio had eight saves for the Raiders.
SCOUTING THE SCARLET KNIGHTS
- Rutgers enters the weekend 5-5 with a meeting against Villanova scheduled for Saturday. The Scarlet Knights have been alternating wins and losses much of the season with more than one of the losses coming to highly ranked BIG EAST opponents. A 5-0 loss to Connecticut was followed by a 5-0 win over Sacred Heart. The return to conference play led to a 6-0 loss to Syracuse. Most recently, Rutgers got back on the winning side of the scoreboard, defeating the Ivy League's Cornell 4-3 in OT.
- Rutgers had three All-BIG EAST selections last year when it went 5-13 overall and 2-4 in conference play. Two of those honorees return in 2012, including Carlie Rouh and Lisa Patrone. Rouh and Patrone currently share the team lead in points (9) and goals (4). Goalkeeper Sarah Stuby is also back for her senior year and now has a 5-5 record behind a 3.05 goals against average and .696 save percentage.
- Bucknell has never beat Rutgers in the teams' four meetings. The Bison did have a bit of a breakthrough last fall, however, as they scored their first goal in the series in the 3-1 loss. In the series' four contests, Rutgers has a 10-1 scoring advantage.
- Cindy Barbosa tied her own Bucknell record for saves in a single game when the Bison and the Scarlet Knights played in 1984. Barbosa turned away 37 shots in the 2-0 loss.
LOOKING FORWARD
Bucknell heads down the home stretch of its regular-season schedule as it enters October. The month opens with the Bison boarding the bus for one its longest road trips of the year to take on Holy Cross (Oct. 6) and Harvard (Oct. 7) next week.
