LEWISBURG, Pa. -- Bucknell women's golf coach Kevin Jamieson announced this week that junior Bridget Wilcox (Bernardsville, N.J./Taft School) will serve as team captain and junior Lauren Bernard (Malvern, Pa./Academy of Notre Dame) as assistant captain for the 2012-13 season.
"Bridget and Lauren have done an incredible job of taking our young team under their wings," said Jameison. "Both have taken on leadership roles and have shown the younger players what it takes to be successful at this level. I look forward to continuing to work with both of them as we lead this year's Bison team into the new Patriot League era."
Wilcox has been Bucknell's top finisher in both tournaments so far this fall. She posted rounds of 76-77-78 in a ninth-place finish at the season-opening Bucknell Invitational, and last week at Michigan's Wolverine Invitational she placed 33rd.
Wilcox led the team in scoring average (77.2) in the spring of 2012, highlighted by a 1-under 71 at UNC Wilmington and a 1-over 73 at Kiawah Island. As a freshman in 2011, she set a school record with a 3-under 69 at the Nittany Lion Invitational, the first sub-70 round in program history.
"Bridget is one of the most passionate players we've ever had," said Jamieson. "Bridget works extremely hard on all the little things, which has made her a fantastic player."
Bernard has also had some terrific moments during her two-plus years at Bucknell so far, most notably in the spring of 2011 when she took runner-up honors at the Big South Championship. That is one of four career top-10 finishes for Bernard, who also won the Philadelphia Amateur Championship in the summer of 2011.
"Lauren has really matured as a player," said Jamieson. "She understands how to take it one shot at a time and has really rounded into a fantastic player."
Wilcox and Bernard will lead the Bison into State College this weekend for the Nittany Lion Invitational. Junior Kasha Scott, sophomore Lexi Klein and freshmen Jen Lee and Meghan Garanich round out the lineup in the play-6, count-4 format.
The 54-hole tournament starts Friday with a 1 p.m. shotgun and runs through Sunday at the Penn State Blue Course. Live scoring will be available through GolfStat.
