ANNAPOLIS, Md./WASHINGTON, D.C. –Bucknell's Jack Else broke his own school record (kept since 2000) for ejections drawn and scored more goals in a game than any Bison since 2007, but his performances alone did not help the Bison men's water polo team to a victory Saturday on the first day of league play. Bucknell opened the day with an 11-6 loss at No. 17 Navy. It then traveled to George Washington and fell to the Colonials by a 15-12 margin.
Else certainly had a standout day among Bison. He drew a school-record 10 ejections in the loss to the Mids, eclipsing his own record of nine he tallied at last year's Eastern Championship against Harvard. Else then drew six more ejections in the nightcap against the Colonials and now has a team-high 36 this season, more than triple any of his teammates. Else now has 141 ejections drawn in his three-year career, putting him two shy of Brad Roslyn for fourth place on the program's all-time list.
Else followed his 10-ejection outing with seven goals against George Washington, eclipsing his previous career high of five. The seven goals were the most by a Bison since Jason Rechel netted seven against Johns Hopkins in 2007. Else also had one goal earlier in the day against Navy as he accounted for eight of the Bison's 18 goals on the day.
Both losses Saturday featured halftime deficits Bucknell (4-7, 0-2 CWPA Southern Division) just could not overcome. Bucknell trailed Navy 6-3 at the half and 10-4 after three quarters of play. It trailed George Washington 9-2 at halftime. A 6-1 Bison advantage in the fourth quarter, including a goal in the final seconds, made the final score much closer.
Mike Kimble was the only Bison to post a pair of multi-goal outings Saturday. He found the back of the net twice against the Mids and three more times opposite the Colonials. Kimble now has a team-high 24 goals this season, one ahead of Else.
Matt Napleton registered seven saves in the opener (vs. Navy) and eight more in the nightcap (vs. George Washington), bringing his season save total to 93.
Bucknell will continue its weekend on the road as it plays at Johns Hopkins Sunday at 11 a.m. A free video broadcast (no audio) will be available: http://www.hopkinssports.com/allaccess/?media=328194
