Bucknell Men's Tennis Goes .500 on Day Two of SJU Invitational

PHILADELPHIA – After a strong start at the Saint Joseph's Invitational yesterday, Bucknell men's tennis ran up against some stiff competition in the singles quarterfinals on Saturday. After five second-round victories, the Bison went winless in the quarterfinals. Play continues tomorrow with the resumption of doubles play where Nick Bybel and Evan Zimmer as well as Josh Katten and Kelly Morque will vie for a semifinal berth.
Plenty of singles action was on tap on the second day of the tournament, and more than one Bison put on quite a show as three matches went to super tiebreaks. Zimmer and Octavio Canibe were the first to go the distance, both in the second round. Zimmer ended up with a 3-6, 6-3, 10-5 victory over Villanova's Mark Miller. The senior later fell to Skyler Davis from Drexel, 6-4, 6-4, in the quarterfinals.
Canibe had a long day with a 3-6, 6-0, 10-5 win against Max Montague of Saint Joseph's. Canibe was unable to pull out a second super tiebreaker in the quarterfinals. The sophomore lost to Army's Roman Cacha 6-1, 1-6, 10-4.
Katten and Aidan Lynch also earned second-round wins, and both victories came at the expense of Patriot League opponents. Katten defeated Lafayette's Chris Matturri 6-4, 6-0, while Lynch knocked out Army's Ron Verano 6-2, 6-1.
Morque won his consolation singles bout, 7-5, 6-4 over Antonio Pena of Hofstra.
No doubles matches were contested on Saturday. Those final matches will play out tomorrow, along with the last of the singles and consolation draws, beginning at 9:30 a.m.
