LEWISBURG, Pa. - Just four more home games remain on Bucknell field hockey's schedule and two of those are this weekend as the Bison host No. 17 Michigan at 12 p.m. on Saturday and Temple at 2 p.m. on Sunday. With the Family Weekend matchups, Bucknell (5-3) has the opportunity to improve to 6-1 at Graham Field for the first time since 2009. Live stats on GameTracker will be available at BucknellBison.com for both contests.
BISON NOTEBOOK
- Bucknell has opened its 2012 schedule with a 4-1 record when playing at Graham Field. The lone loss came just last Sunday in a 3-1 decision against Ohio State. The last time the Bison enjoyed such a strong start was in 2009 when they ultimately went 7-1 at home. Their only loss during that campaign was against American. Bucknell is 25-13 at Graham Field since 2008.
- Two wins this weekend would move head coach Jeremy Cook up the ranks in the record books. Now in his fifth season with the Bison, Cook has a career record of 43-42. With two additional victories, he would tie Martha Ludwig for second all-time at Bucknell in wins. The program record for coaching wins was set by Heather Lewis at 128.
- Tayler Siegrist (Madison, N.J./Madison) tallied three goals in two games last weekend, moving her into a tie for the team goal-scoring led with Rachel Misko (Morristown, N.J./Madison) and Kiersten Sydnor (Shippensburg, Pa./Mercersburg Academy). All three Bison have four goals. No other player has more than one. Bucknell's 18 goals this year have been scored by nine different players and five different Bison have scored the team's game winners.
- Siegrist put together perhaps the best weekend of her career against Towson and Ohio State, registering eight points on three goals and two assists. She now has 12 points on the year, setting a new career high. Her four goals for the season ties her career high set last year as a junior, and she is one assist shy of tying her personal best in that category as well. With her two assists against the Tigers, Siegrist now has 14 for her career, tying her with Almira Baldwin for eighth all-time at Bucknell.
- Joining Siegrist on the list of standout performers was Sydnor and Erica Perrine (Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan). Sydnor was named the Patriot League Rookie of the Week for the third time this season. She has now won the award three out of four possible weeks. Perrine was honored as the league's Goalkeeper of the Week for the second time this fall. Perrine made a season-high 13 saves against Ohio State. One day earlier, she recorded her first shutout of the season in the 6-0 win over Towson.
- When Bucknell takes on Michigan on Saturday, Vickie Resh (Hamburg, Pa./Hamburg Area) will be preparing for her final game at the Junior Pan American Games in Guadalajara, Mexico. Resh and Team USA will face Chile, a team they beat 5-0 in Pool Play, for third place at the tournament and a 2013 Junior World Cup berth. The Americans recently lost 6-0 to powerhouse Argentina in the semifinals.
SCOUTING THE WOLVERINES
- Michigan is also 5-3 this fall with all three losses coming to top-25 teams. Ranked No. 17 themselves in the latest Pen Monto/NFHCA Division I National Coaches Poll, the Wolverines opened their season with a 5-1 loss to No. 2 North Carolina and a 2-1 loss to No. 13 Wake Forest. More recently they were defeated by No. 7 Connecticut 2-1. Michigan does have three wins over ranked teams as well - No. 22 Maine (2-0), No. 21 Albany (2-1 OT), and No. 23 Fairfield (5-0).
- Michigan finished the 2011 campaign at 15-7 overall and 5-1 in the Big Ten. Rachael Mack was a First Team All-Big Ten and Third Team All-NFHCA All-American with 27 points (17G, 3A) last year. She is back for her junior season and against leading the Wolverines offensively with 16 points (7G, 2A).
- Bucknell and Michigan have met just once in series history. The Wolverines defeated the Bison 5-0 last year in Ann Arbor, Mich. Perrine made six saves for Bucknell, but Michigan's Emy Guttman was the impact player in that contest with three goals and one assist. It was Bucknell's third loss of the season to a ranked opponent.
SCOUTING THE OWLS
- Temple enters the weekend with a 3-5 overall record and meeting with Colgate scheduled for Saturday before heading to Lewisburg. The Owls have already faced one Patriot League foe this fall, which ended in a 3-0 loss to Lafayette. Most recently, they defeated No. 15 Drexel by a score of 5-1.
- Temple is getting much of its production from the younger half of its roster. Sophomore Amber Youtz has a team-best 17 points (6G, 5A) this season, while classmate Lizzy Millen is 3-5 in goal with a .287 goals against average and a .694 save percentage. Both were named to the Atlantic 10 All-Rookie Team last fall. The Owls have had to look in some new places for their production as they lost their top two point-scorers from last year when they went 9-13 overall and 4-2. NFHCA All-American Bridget Settles, who finished with 44 points on 20 goals and four assists, graduated last year. Their second-leading scorer Caryn Lambright also graduated.
- Bucknell is 1-2 all-time against Temple with the lone win coming in the first game of the series in 2009. The Owls scored 4:05 into the game in that first meeting. The Bison then held them scoreless for the remainder of the contest and, with goals from Marci Richard and Siegrist following penalty corners, came away with the 2-1 victory.
- When Bucknell and Temple met last fall, the Owls won 4-0. Settles finished with a hat trick and Millen recorded a two-save shutout.
LOOKING FORWARD
Bucknell will have wrap up its homestand on Sept. 29 when it hosts Colgate at 11 a.m. at Graham Field. The contest is the final field hockey match scheduled to be broadcast on Bison Vision. The Bison will then hit the road for the first time in three weeks when they travel to Rutgers for a 1 p.m. contest on Sept. 30 in Piscataway, N.J.
