FORT MYERS, Fla. -- William Morse scored with 4:51 left in the second overtime period to lift defending Atlantic Sun champion Florida Gulf Coast to a 2-1 victory over 10-man Bucknell on Sunday at the FGCU Soccer Complex. Junior Joe Meyerscored his first career goal in the 84th minute to send the Bison into overtime for the third straight game to start the season, but Morse's goal handed them their first loss of the year.
Bucknell (0-1-2) was dealt a major blow only 3:55 into the match when First Team All-Patriot League back Mayowa Alliwas sent off with a red card. The referee pulled out a straight red on the very first foul of the match, a slide tackle at midfield on a player moving away from the goal. The game completely changed from there, as the Bison had to play with 10 men the rest of the way, and the Eagles ultimately finished with a 28-2 shot advantage.
FGCU got on the board first on a goal by Santiago Echeverri, assisted by Rodrigo Saravia, in the 52nd minute.
Bucknell's first shot of the day went into the back of the net. Jermaine Jarrettcarried down the left side and sent a ball into the box to Meyer, who had just come back on in a substitution. Meyer slotted it home to level the match at 1-1.
The Bison had another look with a minute to go in regulation after Brendan Burgdorf pulled in a long punt from Mike Lansing, but Burgdorf's shot was saved by Nathan Ingham. Bucknell had a corner kick in the opening minute of the second overtime period but nothing came of it.
Lansing made his sixth save of the day on Andres Navas in the 103rd minute. Two minutes later Morse had a shot blocked, but then at the 105:09 mark Morse scored with a shot through traffic into the lower left corner to win it for FGCU. The Eagles (1-2) had dropped their first two game of the year against nationally ranked Akron and Georgetown.
"We defended as well as we possibly could under difficult circumstances," said coach Brendan Nashafter the game. "We worked hard and probably deserved a tie, but now we have to regroup and come back strong against a very good La Salle team on Friday."
The Bison and Explorers meet in Philadelphia on Friday at 7 p.m.
