LEWISBURG, Pa. - Senior goalkeeper Sandita McDermott (Rhinebeck, N.Y./Red Hook) and junior forward Chelsey Garkowski (Brick, N.J./Brick Township) earned Patriot League weekly honors on Monday after leading the Bucknell women's soccer team to a 2-1 week. McDermott was named the Brine Goalkeeper of the Week for the second time this season and fifth time in her career, while Garkowski earned Brine Offensive Player of the Week honors for the very first time.
McDermott did not see a shot get past her in two of Bucknell's three games last week. She recorded her fourth shutout of the season in a 2-0 home win over Mount St. Mary's last Tuesday. Against CSU Bakersfield in the first game of the Saint Mary's (Calif.) Tournament, McDermott had six saves and left with a 3-0 lead in the 74th minute. The Roadrunners scored a late goal to make it 3-1 after the Bison had cleared the bench.
On Sunday against tourney host Saint Mary's, McDermott finished with a season-high 10 saves in a 2-0 loss. The second goal came with just three minutes to play. The Bison were pressing forward looking for the equalizer when the Gaels hit a breakaway on a counter attack. McDermott made a spectacular save on the initial shot, but Saint Francis scored on the rebound.
McDermott now has a .783 save percentage in 10 starts, and she is tied for the Patriot League lead with four shutouts. Her 11 career shutouts rank fourth in program history.
Garkowski continues to shine up top for the Bison, who have enjoyed a goal-scoring resurgence this fall. Bucknell has scored 17 goals already, seven more than all of last season, and Garkowski's speed up front has been a major reason why. She recorded her first career two-goal game in the 3-1 win over CSU Bakersfield. Garkowski opened the scoring just 4:37 into the match, and she added a key insurance goal in the 63rd minute, giving the Bison a 3-0 cushion.
Garkowski now has three goals and three assists on the season, and she leads the Bison with nine total points. All of those figures are career highs.
Bucknell is now 6-4 on the season. The Bison host Canisius on Friday night in their final tuneup prior to the start of Patriot League play.
