LEWISBURG, Pa. – With Bucknell field hockey in the middle of its longest homestand of the season, junior Vickie Resh is still in Guadalajara, Mexico playing with Team USA at the Junior Pan American Games. Resh will be checking in periodically throughout her international experience. Below is the midfielder's next blog entry on beating Trinidad and Tobago and hunting for some Cheez-its. Pool play at the Junior Pan American Games concludes today.
The past couple days have been busy. After our game against Paraguay, we had two much-needed days off. The first day was spent on recovery. We first had strength conditioning and then moved into the pool for a little while. In the afternoon, we walked about 10 blocks to what we called the “market.” It was just a bunch of little stands set up that sold handmade jewelry, hair accessories, and décor. The coaches told us to try our hand at bartering while we were there; however, I only know two words in Spanish (hola and gracias) and neither one helped very much in my attempt at lowering the prices. I ended up buying a pretty bracelet that I'm excited to get some good use out of.
The second day of rest we got up early and went to watch the men's team play Barbados. While they were warming up, we did some running of our own on a nearby track. After cheering them on to a 5-4 win, we came back to the hotel for some homework and study time.
On Friday, we played Trinidad and Tobago and again came up with a big 9-1 win. Yesterday we played Chile and after a well-fought match, lost 2-1. Statistically, we had them beat in every way except goals. It was a tough loss, but it's better to have lost a match at this point in the tournament than later in crossovers.
Last night we went out to eat with the men's team and then had a free night to just hang out and have fun. Today we also have off and have had lots of free time to relax, do homework, or whatever else we want. A few of my teammates and I made a trip to the Walmart across the street for some snacks, but I found out that Walmarts in Mexico don't carry goldfish, cheez-its, poptarts, or most of my favorite snacks. I found some snacks that will do though, so no worries. Tonight we go out for an Italian dinner and I'm hoping for some good pasta!
Tomorrow (Sept. 17) it's back to business as we take on Jamaica in the morning. We're hoping to finish off regular pool play with a big win!
GO USA and BISON!
