Bucknell Women's Soccer Falls at Saint Mary's 2-0, Takes 2nd Place at SMC Tourney

MORAGA, Calif. -- Tournament MVP Caroline Beaulne scored in the 16th minute and Jaime Turrentine tacked on an insurance goal with three minutes to play, lifting Saint Mary's (Calif.) to a 2-0 victory over Bucknell in the finale of the Saint Mary's Tournament on Sunday afternoon. The Bison finish in second place in the four-team tournament, with the host Gaels taking the title with a pair of victories.
Bucknell defeated CSU Bakersfield 3-1 on Friday in the tournament opener, and the Roadrunners bounced back on Sunday with a 1-0 win over UC Davis. Despite the loss to Saint Mary's the Bison come home with a 6-4 record and six wins in their last eight matches.
"This was a fantastic trip and was well worth the long travel," said coach Ben Landis after the game. "We had a great turnout, with well over 100 Bucknell fans here to cheer us on. It was great to catch up with so many alumni who are now living out here on the West Coast."
For the first time since the season opener, Bucknell's potent offense was kept off the scoreboard. The Bison took 10 shots, putting three on frame, while the Gaels (5-3-1) had 16 shots. Sandita McDermott finished with a season-high 10 saves for the Bison. Cassie Denger led the way with three shots.
Saint Mary's scored 15:46 into the match when Brianna Campos found Beaulne in the box for a shot into the left side of the net. With Bucknell pressing in the late stages of the game, Turrentine scored off a rebound to make it 2-0. McDermott made a difficult save on the initial shot, but the ball leaked out to Turrentine for the rebound goal.
With a minute to play Saint Mary's went to its backup goalkeeper, and the Bison almost pulled back within a goal. Bucknell had a corner kick that Kate Brenot punched off the goalpost, and the Bison could not quite get to the loose ball. After the Gaels cleared momentarily, Brenot made a save on Brigit Falcon.
"We played tough all weekend," said Landis. "Saint Mary's is a very good team, but our players left the field disappointed because they felt we were good enough to win the game. But overall our spirits are good as we head back home."
The Gaels extended their unbeaten streak to four (3-0-1), which includes a 1-1 tie with Oregon last week.
Following the game junior Chelsey Garkowski and seniors Kayla Yee and Corinne Collins were named to the All-Tournament Team. Garkowski scored two goals in Friday's win over CSU Bakersfield. Collins is a native of Orinda, Calif., just four miles from the Saint Mary's campus. She is one of four Californians on the Bucknell roster.
Bucknell has one game remaining prior to the start of Patriot League play. That will be next Friday night at home against Canisius. Game time will be 7 p.m. at Emmitt Field.
