EMMITSBURG, Md. - Six Bucknell women's tennis team members advanced to the semifinals of their singles flights Friday on the first day of the three-day Mount St. Mary's Invitational. Elena Vidrascu, Maria Cioffi, Christie Schneider, Stephanie Pino, Ellie Fraser and Kristen Bishof each won a singles match to advance to the semifinals.
Only singles were contest Friday and each player in the field got a chance to play one match. Six Bison also fell to the consolation bracket, but each of them can still finish as high as fifth in their flights.
Cioffi and Pino are now just a win away from equaling their finals appearances they had at last weekend's Bucknell Invitational.
Friday's winning Bison all won by relatively wide margins. Flight A featured Cioffi winning by a 6-2, 6-3 score and Vidrascu capturing a 6-2, 6-4 victory. Schneider advanced in Flight B by a 6-3, 6-2 margin. Fraser moved on in Flight C 6-2, 6-2. Pino's first set at Flight C was close at 7-6, but she bounced back with a 6-1 victory in the second set to claim the match over Mount St. Mary's Liz Rossi. Bishof rounded out the list of semifinalists with a 6-2, 6-2 win at Flight D.
Each flight consisted of eight players. Additional singles matches and doubles will be contested over the next two days.
