Bucknell Men's Tennis Sends Five through to Second Round at Pair of Invites

EMMITSBURG, Md. – Bucknell men's tennis split its squad between the Mount St. Mary's Invitational and the Farnsworth/Princeton Invitational on Friday, but that didn't keep the Bison from collecting some wins. Evan Zimmer and Josh Katten both won their first round singles matches while Katten and Kelly Morque teamed up for an early doubles victory at Princeton. Octavio Canibe and Jonathan DeFrancesch were winners at Mount St. Mary's. Play at both events continues tomorrow.
Katten had a tough first-round test in singles on Friday afternoon. The senior bounced back after a first-set loss and ultimately defeated Penn's Andrew Perman 4-6, 6-4, 6-2. Katten was not so lucky in his second round match against St. John's MJ Every. Katten was forced to retire after dropping the opening frame 6-1.
Katten's day also included a win in doubles while partnered with Morque. The duo knocked out Mohamed El Tonbari and Michael Lin of Princeton, 8-4.
Zimmer had an easier time in his opening match, claiming a 6-3, 6-2 win over Cornell's Alex Sidney. The Bison senior then fell in three sets to Yale's Kyle Dawson, 6-0, 3-6, 6-1.
Farther south in Emmitsburg, Md., Canibe and DeFrancesch became the only Bison to advance to the second round of singles. Canibe was a 7-5, 3-6, 10-7 winner over Duk Young Park of Morgan State. DeFrancesch defeated Jordan Kuchta 6-4, 6-3. It was his second win over Kuchta in as many weeks. Canibe also won over the player from Loyola (Md.) in straight sets at last weekend's Bucknell Quad.
Full action continues tomorrow with more singles play and the beginning of doubles at Mount St. Mary's. Finals are scheduled for Sunday.
