LEWISBURG, Pa. --For the second year in a row, Bucknell senior men's soccer co-captain Brendan Burgdorf (Westfield, N.J./Pingry School) has been named to the Missouri Athletic Club Hermann Trophy Watch List. Once again, Burgdorf will be under consideration for college soccer's national player of the year award, selected by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America.
A two-time All-Patriot League selection and the league's 2010 Offensive Player of the Year, Burgdorf is one of 42 men on the Hermann Trophy Watch List and the only student-athlete named from the Patriot League.
The MAC Hermann Trophy is the highest individual award in intercollegiate soccer presented annually in January during a banquet at the Missouri Athletic Club in St. Louis. The list will be narrowed down by NSCAA members from Division I programs to 15 semifinalists by Nov. 29. Member coaches and fans will then vote for their top three choices and the finalists will be announced Dec. 6. The winners will be announced at the awards banquet at the Missouri Athletic Club on Friday, Jan. 11.
Last year Burgdorf was named the Preseason Patriot League Offensive Player of the Year, and he turned in a third straight outstanding season. Even though his goal-scoring numbers fell a bit in 2011, Burgdorf was still very impactful and was a handful for opposing defenses. He finished with two goals -- both coming against nationally ranked opponents in Notre Dame and Indiana -- and a team-high six assists for a total of 10 points. Burgdorf, who was also a Capital One Academic All-District selection last year, has 17 goals and 10 assists for 44 points in his career.
Burgdorf registered nine goals and two assists as a freshman, helping Bucknell to a Patriot League title and NCAA Tournament berth. He scored the lone goal in a 1-0 victory over American in the Patriot League final as well as in a 1-0 victory over Princeton in the first round of NCAAs. He was later named to the NSCAA All-Mid-Atlantic Team, an honor he would achieve again in 2010 and 2011.
As a sophomore, Burgdorf led the Bison to another Patriot League championship and NCAA appearance. He led the squad with six goals and 16 points en route to league MVP honors.
Burgdorf is one of three senior co-captains this fall, joining Collin Costello and Josh Plump. Preseason practice began last week, and the Bison will have an exhibition game at home against Monmouth on Saturday before opening up the 2012 campaign at VCU on Aug. 24.
