BOSTON - Former Bucknell soccer and track standout Andrew Powell '12 was recognized by the Massachusetts House of Representatives for his athletic achievements as a Bison yesterday. A native of Charleston, Mass., Powell was honored by State Representative Peter Durant in Boston.
Powell graduated in the spring with a storied career in two programs at Bucknell. As a sophomore he became Bucknell's first-ever Patriot League champion in the decathlon and later added a pair of heptathlon titles to his resume. In 2012, he successfully defended his conference championship in both the heptathlon and decathlon while also finishing runner-up in the indoor high jump. Throughout his career, Powell led the Bison track squad to four team trophies, including each of the last three titles outdoors.
On the soccer pitch, Powell was twice named to the All-Patriot League Team. A starting defender for the Bison who also has five goals to his name, he helped Bucknell to a pair of conference tournament titles and a regular-season championship in 2009. His contributions led the Bison to back-to-back appearances at the NCAA Championships as well.
Across both sports, Powell collected nine All-Patriot League citations, seven Patriot League team trophies and school records in the decathlon, heptathlon and 4x60 shuttle hurdle relay. He also ranks among the top 10 in program history in the indoor and outdoor high jump, 60-meter hurdles and 4x55 shuttle hurdle relays. In the classroom, he is a five-time member of the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll and was named to the NSCAA Scholar All-East First Team.
Shortly before graduating with a degree in management, Powell won the Bryan-Humphreys Award, presented to senior athletes "who have exhibited exceptional versatility within his/her sport, displaying outstanding achievement and the selfless determination to help the team succeed by contributing in a number of ways," at the annual Senior Athletic Awards Banquet.
Powell will continue his college career at Wake Forest next fall where he plans to pursue a Master's degree in accounting and play soccer for the Demon Deacons.
