LEWISBURG, Pa. - A quartet of Bison swimmers traveled to Omaha, Neb., this past week for the U.S. Olympic Trials, which are being held at the CenturyLink Center through Monday. Erik Heinemann (Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y./Cold Spring Harbor), Mike Nicholson (Chappaqua, N.Y./Horace Greeley), Emily Norton (Boynton Beach, Fla./Saint Andrew's School) and Matthew Segar (Carmel, Ind./Carmel) are the four Bucknell swimmers who qualified for the prestigious event and had the opportunity to compete against some of the nation's best.
Norton, who will be a sophomore on the Bison women's swimming team in the fall, was the final member of the Bucknell contingent to compete, racing in the 200-meter breaststroke on Friday. Heinemann (200 fly), Nicholson (400 IM) and Segar (200 free) swam earlier in the week.
Nicholson, a two-time All-Patriot League selection who will be a junior in 2012-13, was the top Bison finisher, placing 75th of 109 in the 400 IM. Heinemann, a sophomore this coming year, was 100th of 134, the recently graduated Segar was 116th of 124 and Norton was 114th of 118 against a very competitive field.
The top two swimmers in each event, plus four more in the 100 and 200 free events, earn a berth in the 2012 Olympics, which will be held in London later this summer. Ryan Lochte and Michael Phelps finished first and second in the finals of both the 200 free (Segar) and 400 IM (Nicholson). Bobby Bollier and Davis Tarwater took home the top two spots in the 200 fly (Heinemann), while Rebecca Soni and Micah Lawrence were first and second in the 200 breast prelims (Norton).
