LEWISBURG, Pa. – Bucknell softball's Meredith Dickson (Fogelsville, Pa./Northwestern Lehigh) received double honors on Tuesday as the senior was named Second Team All-Patriot League and Academic All-Patriot League. Mary Horton (Plantation, Fla./St. Thomas Aquinas) was also a First Team All-League honoree, while Mallory Lyons (Coatesville, Pa./Coatesville Area) earned a spot on the academic squad as well. It was the first career honor for each of the Bison trio.
Horton's first-team selection came as a utility player after the junior led the Bison in hitting and anchored Bucknell's middle infield. Splitting her time between shortstop and second base, Horton registered a team-high .313 batting average and also led the orange and Blue in runs scored (24), doubles (5) and walks (13). Horton finished the season 4-for-4 in stolen bases as well.
The all-league selection is the first of Horton's career, but she does five Bucknell a ninth straight season of at least one player named to the first team.
Dickson earned her second-team all-league citation at catcher after starting 44 of the team's 45 games this season. The captain finished her senior campaign hitting .288 with four doubles and her first career triple and home run this spring. Dickson's eight sacrifice hits was a team-high, while her 10 RBI ranked second on the squad.
Dickson is the first Bucknell catcher to earn all-league honors since former teammate Elyse Colmenero was named to the first team in 2009. The current Bison will graduate later this month with a degree in accounting and a 3.58 GPA before moving on to a position as an audit associate with Parente Beard. While at Bucknell, Dickson has been named to the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll every season, has earned a spot on the Dean's List four times and became a member of the Alpha Lambda Delta Academic Honor Society. She has served as a co-op associate with PPL Energy Plus and as a finance intern with the Northampton Community College Finance Department.
On campus, Dickson is a teaching assistant for several accounting courses as well as a resident assistant. Through her duties as a Transition to College Teacher/Peer Mentor, she has been able to counsel freshman on the responsibilities and challenges of college life and has led a student panel regarding common concerns of incoming freshmen.
Lyons joins Dickson on the Academic All-Patriot League Team for her first career honor. A member of the Bucknell Dean's List and Patriot League Academic Honor Roll, the sophomore was also a solid contributor to the Bison on the field. Lyons led Bucknell in home runs (3), doubles (5) and RBI (13). She was also second on the team in walks with 11. Although she has not yet declared a major, Lyons carries a 3.39 cumulative GPA.
The Academic All-Patriot League Team was added for all sports beginning in the 2010-11 season to honor additional student-athletes for both academic and athletic success. This year's softball team has 10 student-athletes. Student-athletes must have at least a 3.2 cumulative GPA and be a starter or a key reserve. Award winners are determined by a vote of the league's sports information directors who cannot vote for their own athletes.
All-league teams and major awards are decided by a vote of Patriot League head coaches who cannot vote for their own athletes.
