Matthew Segar Receives Senior Athletic Award at Bucknell

LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell senior Matthew Segar (Carmel, Ind./Carmel), a member of the Bison men's swimming and diving team, received a special award at the University's annual Senior Athletic Awards Banquet, sponsored by the Bison Club and held at the Elaine Langone Center on Tuesday, May 1.
Segar won the Robert A. Latour Service Award, presented to senior athletes "for extraordinary service to Bucknell and local communities." Segar shared the award with Christine Holodnik of the women's rowing team, who was the female selection.
In addition to Segar, several other student-athletes were honored at the banquet, including the winners of the Christy Mathewson Award, given to the most outstanding athletes in the senior class.
A three-time All-Patriot League selection who has qualified for the U.S. Olympic Trials in the 200 free, Segar finished third in the 200 free, fourth in the 500 free and fifth in the 1,650 free at this year's Patriot League Championships. He will graduate with the school record in the 200 free, and he ranks in the top 10 in program history in four other events (500 free - 2nd; 1,650 free - 4th; 1,000 free - 5th; 200 fly - 10th).
The first Bison to win the same event at the ECAC Championships in back-to-back years since Jay Gross in 1992 and 1993, Segar captured his second career ECAC crown this past February when he won the 200 free.
A 10-time scorer in individual events at the Patriot League Championships, including three top-five finishes in 2012, Segar was a Mid-Major Honorable Mention selection in 2011. He was part of 10 relays that show up on Bucknell's top-10 lists.
A two-time Patriot League Academic Honor Roll member, Segar earned a spot on the Academic All-Patriot League Team in 2012. He is a computer science major with a 3.42 cumulative GPA who has been on the Dean's List three times.
A member of a number of on-campus committees, Segar has performed a number of volunteer activities, including participating in an AIDS walk, cleaning up trails at a local state park, serving at a local food bank and participating in a Swim Across America fundraiser.
Bucknell is a highly selective, privately endowed liberal arts institution with an enrollment of approximately 3,500 undergraduate students. Bucknell competes in NCAA Division I as a member of the Patriot League and has full membership along with American, Army, Colgate, Holy Cross, Lafayette, Lehigh and Navy. Bucknell has won the Presidents' Cup, signifying the Patriot League's all-sports champion, in 17 of 21 years, including 13 of the last 14.
