LEWISBURG, Pa. - After leading Bucknell softball with a .474 batting average and helping the team to its first Patriot League win of the season, Laura Sandford (New Egypt, N.J./New Egypt) was named the Susquehanna Valley Limousine Bison Athlete of the Week on Monday. Among the junior's offensive highlights in a week when the Bison went 3-3 was a game-winning RBI single to help Bucknell knock off Holy Cross 4-3 in nine innings.
In the four-game series against Holy Cross, Sandford hit at an impressive .533 (8-for-15) clip. She also recorded a double and two RBI. Both runs batted in came in game two against the Crusaders with the biggest providing a walk-off victory for the Bison in extra innings. The win was the first of three straight for Bucknell, which has one regular-season series remaining on its schedule. The Bison won the final three games against the Crusaders.
Sandford also hit 3-for-3 in the first contest of the series, and she finished the meeting with Holy Cross with three multi-hit games. The second baseman now has four multi-hit games in her career. Her current four-game hitting streak equals a career best as well, equaling her string of one hit in four straight games midway through her sophomore campaign.
Over six games last week, including a mid-week doubleheader at Saint Francis (Pa.), Sandford hit a team-best .474 (9-for-19) with one run scored to go along with her two runs batted in. Her two RBI tied a single-game high for her career.
The Bison Athlete of the Week award is the first of Sandford's career. She also becomes the first softball player to earn the honor since Sherry Finkel on May 16, 2010.
Bucknell (9-32, 3-13 PL) will wrap up its regular season with a four-game series at Lafayette next weekend. Saturday's doubleheader in Easton, Pa., is set for a 1 p.m. start, while Sunday will get underway at noon. Live stats on GameTracker will be available for all four contests.
