Bison Feature: MacLean Shines as Bucknell's Angel in the Infield
LEWISBURG, Pa. -When Bucknell softball returns to Becker Field this weekend, the Bison will be joining forces with the Angel 34 Foundation in the fight against childhood cancer. The team will be collecting donations for the foundation during its doubleheader with Army at 1 p.m. on Saturday. The day's events will also include games and t-shirt giveaways for fans between innings.
Saturday will not be the first encounter between Bucknell softball and Angel 34. Bison pitcher Alex MacLean (Northampton, Pa./Northampton) first became involved with the organization as a high school student. Her commitment to helping children and families dealing cancer continued during her days at Bucknell. Now a junior, she completed an internship with Angel 34 last summerhelping to organize many of its camps and provide those kids with a chance at some outdoor fun.
With MacLean as the spark behind the team's community involvement, Bucknell's efforts now continue into the spring where it will collect donations for the many programs and opportunities it provides to children with cancer. On Saturday, the Bison will also release seven gold balloons prior to the game. Of the 46 children who are diagnosed with cancer every day in the United States, seven will not survive. A representative from the Angel 34 Foundation will also throw out the ceremonial first pitch.
Additional games including a water balloon toss, three-legged race and limbo contest will also take place between select innings. Fans in attendance will also be eligible for a free t-shirt.
The Angel 34 Foundation was founded in 2003 by Nicole Sheriff, who passed away from Ewing's Sarcoma at the age of 15. Since its establishment, Angel 34 has been committed to bringing hope and healing to the children and families of those affected by childhood cancer. Bucknell softball will host Army in a four-game series April 14-15 at Becker Field. Play begins at 1 p.m. on Saturday and noon on Sunday.
