TOWSON, Md. - Although the outdoor season is just getting underway, Bucknell men's track and field has already put up some impressive results. Tom Barr broke the program's shot put record and 10 other Bison claimed victories at the unscored Towson Invitational on Saturday. John Dugan was also a winner at Susquehanna's Jim Taylor Invitational.
Barr threw 54 feet, 2 ½ inches in the shot put, topping his previous career best by exactly two feet. The Bucknell record had been held by Timothy Medlock since 2009 at 53-5 ½. On Saturday Barr, who also holds Bucknell's indoor shot put record, finished second overall. He also won the hammer throw with another career best. His mark of 174-8 held him in 10th place in program history. Barr's day also included a fifth-place finish in the discus (149-6).
Not the only thrower to record a program top-10 mark, Barr was joined on the record lists by freshman Laddie Trees in the javelin and Stephen Koullias in the shot put. Trees won the javelin in his collegiate debut with a throw of 208-7. He now ranks seventh all-time at Bucknell. Koullias was fourth overall in the shot put at Towson, while his throw of 51-11 ¼ places him sixth in program annals.
The Bison saw number of wins both on the track and in the field events. Luke Webster was the top placer in the discus (157-9), and Ray Holmes won both the triple jump (45-1 ½) and the long jump (20-10 ½). Daniel Markwalter rounded out the field event winners with a high clearance of 14-9 in the pole vault.
On the track, Robert Arent was first in the 400-meter hurdles (53.43) and second in the 110-meter hurdles (14.87). Dave Brown led a quartet of dominance in the 1,500. The senior won in 4:00.56, while Chris Oesterlin, D.J. Krystek and Andrew Garcia-Garrison placed second through fourth, respectively.
Dustin Horning won the 800 in 1:55.40. The time was a career best and earned the junior his first-ever gold medal in the event. Justin Hicks, who is coming off the Patriot League Indoor Track & Field Championships at which he was named the Outstanding Track Athlete of the Meet, won the 100 meters in a time of 11.02 seconds.
With most of the squad at Towson, a select few Bison also competed at Susquehanna on Saturday Dugan won the steeplechase with a time of 9:27.35. Ben Burgess was second in the triple jump, clearing 41-10 ¾. Also claiming top-five finishes were David Blaides in the 800 (1:58.19), Matt Pozo in the 400-meter hurdles (57.84) and Sean Dougherty in the long jump (20-7).
Bucknell returns to action April 6-7 at the Colonial Relays, hosted by William & Mary in Williamsburg, Va.
