WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - Laddie Trees and Quinten Marcott claimed Bucknell's first two wins of the meet, and Christian Lupica added his name to the program record books twice as Bison track and field opened competition at the Colonial Relays in Williamsburg, Va., on Friday. Trees won his second javelin title in as many meets, while Marcott was the top thrower in the shot put with a personal-best 52-4 ½. The Colonial Relays concludes tomorrow with more than two dozen more races.
Among those who will continue in Sunday's finals is Lupica. The freshman advanced in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 14.51 seconds. The time, which seeds him seventh in the final, is also the fourth-fastest in Bucknell history. He will be joined in the final by Robert Arent, who qualified with a time of 14.50.
Lupica was also ninth overall in the 200 meters. His time of 21.69 ranks him ninth in program annals. It is the first time during the outdoor season that Lupica has inked his name in any event.
Marcott entered the season with one of the best shot put marks in program history, but the junior improved on that distance Saturday with his winning 52-4 ½. He moved up to fourth in Bucknell history with his first victory in the event since winning the Bloomsburg Open last April.
Taking second place in the shot put was Luke Webster with a career-best 50-9 ¼. The mark was more than five feet over his previous personal high.
The Bison's strength in the throws events continued in the javelin and the hammer as well. Trees led the field in the javelin with a mark of 205-5. He was the only thrower at better than 200 feet. Leonard Joseph placed second in the hammer throw in 194-2, giving him a career best. Tom Barr was fourth (163-3) and Ted Mottola was fifth (160-11).
Also earning the opportunity to compete on Sunday was Kamal Riley in the 100 meters. After running 10.98 in the prelims, he improved to 10.90 in the semis. Riley is now seeded fifth heading into the final.
In other action, Michael McGown earned a second-place finish in the 10,000 meters. The freshman completed the late-night race in 30:22.55. Arent placed third in the 400 hurdles (50.82) and Jordan Donaldson was eighth in the 800 (1:53.04). Daniel Markwalter cleared a career best in the pole vault (15-3) to take third. Andrew Powell was eighth in the champions division of the long jump (22-7 ¼).
Bucknell finds itself in second place after the first full day of competition. The Colonial Relays begin again Sunday at 9 a.m.
