WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - Robert Arent(New Providence, N.J./New Providence) broke his own 110-meter hurdle record as Bucknell men's track and field placed second by just 18 points to Michigan on the final day of the Colonial Relays on Saturday. Arent was the top collegiate finisher in the hurdle race, where he clocked in at 14.31 seconds.
As a team, Bucknell narrowly missed a second straight Colonial Relays title. With 165 points, the Bison were runners up to Michigan, which totaled 177points. The two squads had a comfortable lead over the rest of the 27-team field with Hampton taking third at 92 total points.
"We gave Michigan all it could handle," said head coach Kevin Donnerafter the meet. "They just had a little more quality depth in the running events. This meet was a war of attrition and it simulates a two-day patriot League Championship where we ask our top athletes to compete in multiple events and rounds."
One Bison who competed in multiple events and rounds with quite a bit of success was Arent. While it wasn't the only impressive performance of the day, Arent's 14.31-second finish in the 110-meter hurdles was the lone record-breaking outing on the men's side. The senior re-set the Bucknell record by one-hundredth of a second. He was second overall in the race but the first among collegiate runners.
Christian Lupica(Newtown, Pa./Holy Ghost Prep) was seventh overall in the same race with a personal-best of his own. After running the fourth-best time in program history in yesterday's prelims, Lupica improved that mark to 14.47 seconds today.
The third and final top-10 mark to fall on Saturday came in the triple jump. Ray Holmes (Campbell, N.Y./Campbell Savona Central) was fourth overall in the champions division, posting a mark of 46 feet, 8 ¾ inches. That distance places him ninth in program history. Alex Prieto(Princeton Junction, N.J./West Windsor Plainsboro South) was also sixth (46-3 ¼).
Many of Bucknell's top finishes came at the shortest distances. Kamal Riley(Hyde Park, Mass./Charlestown) was second in the 100 meters with a time of 11.02 seconds. The sprint medley relay was also second, clocking in at 3:26.16. The 4x100 (42.15) and 4x200 relays (1:29.16) were both fourth overall.
After the tough two-day meet, the Bison will now turn their attention to their home schedule. Bucknell will host the Bison Outdoor Classic April 13-15 at Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium in the first of two meets on its home turf.
