LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell track and field kicked off the Bison Outdoor Classic with some strong results at Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium on Saturday. Women's distance running highlighted Bucknell's performance as three top-10 marks fell, including two in the 1,500 meters courtesy of Hana Casalnova and Caroline Tolli. Competition resumes Sunday at 10:30 a.m.
Casalnova and Tolli finished 12th and 13th, respectively, in the 1,500. Although the duo missed out on top-10 finishes, it did not miss out on top-10 times. Casalnova clocked in at 4 minutes, 31.14 seconds, giving her the fourth-fastest mark in program history. At 4:31.18, Tolli now ranks fifth, moving up from ninth. The junior's race on Saturday was more than six seconds faster than her previous career best. It is the first time in her career Casalnova has ranked among the top 10 in the 1,500.
Also placing 18th in the 1,500 was Beth Braunegg. At 4:35.93, the sophomore recorded a career best of her own. Had it not been for the strong performances of her teammates, that time would also have put her among the top 10 best marks in program annals.
In the women's 5,000, Emily Liggett finished fifth overall. With a time of 17:05.91, she now ranks third in Bucknell history. Like Casalnova in the 1,500, Liggett was not ranked previous to the Bison Outdoor Classic.
Field events were a high point for both the men's and the women's squads. Tayler Siegrist was third in the women's javelin with a throw of 141 feet, 8 inches, and Laddie Trees was fourth on the men's side in 197-4. Siegrist's mark was a season best.
Luke Webster finished fifth in the discus with a personal record of 166-6. That places him third in program history and is less than three feet off the school record. Webster's throw on Saturday is the best by a Bison since Shawn Matthews threw 166-11 in 2000.
In the women's discus, Abby Monaghan closed things out in fifth with a throw of 145-0. Rebecca Misko was seventh (142-1).
Action begins again at 10:30 a.m. with pole vault. Running opens with the 4x100 relay at 11 a.m.
