Track & Field Continues to Make Strikes at Conclusion of Bison Outdoor Classic

LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell track and field continued to post some of the best marks in program history as it wrapped up the two-day Bison Outdoor Classic at Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium on Sunday. Although the Bison did not collect a victory at the unscored meet, more than two dozen top-10 marks fell, including 10 on the final day of competition.
One of the biggest jumps up the record lists on Sunday was Ray Holmes in the triple jump. The sophomore entered the weekend ranked ninth all-time at Bucknell but quickly improved to third with a distance of 48 feet, 8 inches today and became the fourth Bison in program history to clear 48 feet. The performance, which was nearly two feet better than his previous career bet, earned him fifth in the meet.
In the women's triple jump, Alexandra Romanelli broke into the top 10 for the first time in her career. Her career best of 38-0 ¼ earned her seventh place at the meet and 10th in the record books.
In other field events, Leonard Joseph was second in the hammer after becoming the fourth Bison to throw better than 200 feet. In his first-ever meet surpassing the milestone, he finished with a throw of 200-1. Daniel Markwalter was third in the pole vault with a career high of his own, clearing 15-9. Joseph and Markwalter are both ranked fourth in program history in their respective events.
The pole vault was another high point for the Bucknell women as Emily Ando, Yanelis Mestre and Autumn Schellenberger all tied or bettered their career bests. Ando tied for fifth at the meet, clearing 11-7 ¾, while Mestre and Schellenberger tied for seventh at 11-1 ¾. All three rank among the top six at Bucknell.
On the track, Hana Casalnova continued to rewrite the history books, this time in the 800 meters. The sophomore placed eighth overall, while her time of 2 minutes, 10.95 seconds moved her up the record list to third. It was the second top-10 time in as many days for Casalnova who also took over the No. 4 spot in yesterday's 1,500 meters (4:31.14).
Jordan Donaldson was fifth in the men's 800 with a career-best 1:50.96.
At the shorter distances, Robert Arent was third and Christian Lupica 10th in the 400-meter hurdles. Arent finished in 53.02 seconds, while Lupica clocked in at 55.08. The rookie is now ninth in program annals. In the 100 meters, Sasha Hornock was fifth on the women's side and Justin Hicks was fifth on the men's. At 12.31 seconds, Hornock posted a career best by two-hundredths of a second. Hicks finished in 10.84.
"Overall it was a nice meet for us," said head coach Kevin Donner at the conclusion of the meet. "The competition was very strong in every event. We have pockets of people competing awesome. However, we also have some people that need to get rolling if we want to compete for a league title in a few weeks."
Bucknell will stay at home for its next meet. The Bison will host the Bucknell Team Challenge April 21 in their season finale at Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium. The squad will be recognizing its seniors as well as the 1981-82 cross country/track and field teams for their 30-year reunion.
