Bison Women's Tennis Wins Doubles but Falls 5-2 to Navy in Patriot League Opener

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Bucknell women's tennis won the doubles point and then earned an early second point, but Navy powered through in the end to steal the 5-2 victory at West Branch Tennis Club on Saturday. Dumitrita Iepuras (Chisinau, Moldova/Germantown Friends School) was the Bison's lone winner in singles, while Bucknell (2-10, 0-1 PL) won at the first two doubles positions in its Patriot League opener.
Doubles action could hardly have been closer. Daria Tuzhikova (Minsk, Belarus/Gymnasium No. 7) and Elena Vidrascu (Rochester, N.Y./Pittsford Sutherland) worked their way past Emani Decquir and Stefanie Ton by a slim 9-7 margin at the No. 1 position. The Bison ensured the first point of the day as Courtney Casey (Rockville, Md./Georgetown Visitation) and Lydia Colvin (Cleveland, Ohio/Orange) defeated Noelle Kaufmann and Erin Snook, 8-6, at No. 2. It was the first time this season that Bucknell had used those doubles pairings.
Casey is now in sole possession of the 25th spot at Bucknell in all-time combined victories. The senior is 60-67 as a Bison.
Although Iepuras and Jen Bush (Hinsdale, Ill./Hinsdale Central) just missed out on completing the sweep with a 9-8 loss at third doubles, Iepuras moved up the Bucknell record lists as well with her singles win. The senior defeated Darien Sears 6-3, 6-3 in the top spot in the lineup. Iepuras now has a career combined record of 106-84. The senior's wins total ties her with Samantha Berthod and Rheanna Gaskin for eighth in program history.
Iepuras was the lone singles winner for Bucknell, but Vidrascu gave Ton a run for her money at the No. 3 slot. Vidrascu won the opening set 6-4. Ton then pushed it three sets, winning the final two fames 6-3, 6-2.
Bucknell will return to the courts for three road matches late next week. First up is Villanova at 1 p.m. on Wednesday. Georgetown (March 30) and the completion of the match with Mount St. Mary's (March 31) will follow. The Bison led The Mount 1-0 when the match was suspended for rain last week.
