ORLANDO, Fla. - Bucknell men's tennis saw its current winless streak expand to three matches, falling 5-2 to NJIT and 4-3 to Quinnipiac in Orlando, Fla., on Thursday afternoon. Evan Zimmer collected fourvictories on the day, including pairing with Gregg Cohenca for the Bison's lone doubles win against each opponent, but the effort could not keep Bucknell alive as it fell to 3-7 on the season.
Zimmer and Cohenca teamed up for a close 8-7 win at No. 1 doubles over Victor Martinez and Petr Rousar. By that time, the first point of the day had already been determined, however, as NJIT earned the decisions at the second and third slots.
Zimmer went on to collect his second win of the afternoon with a 7-6, 6-3 decision over Martinez at No. 2 singles. The junior later claimed a third and fourth victory by teaming again with Cohenca in an 8-5 doubles win and a singles vs. Quinnipiac. He made it past James Kwei 6-2, 4-0 who was forced to retire in the second set.
Against NJIT, Octavio Canibe was a three-set winner at the No. 3 position, going 2-6, 7-6, 6-0 over Rousar. Josh Katten and Gregory Maxson also battled their way through three-set affairs, but those Bison had less luck in the end despite winning their opening sets. Katten was unable to hang on and eventually fell 2-6, 6-4, 7-6 (6) to Ike Kiro. Maxson also went down 3-6, 6-0, 6-3 to Fraser Croad.
Three-set matches continued to play a role against Quinnipiac that evening. Cohenca fell in three sets - 1-6, 7-6, 6-3 - to Andrew Weeden at No. 1 singles. Canibe also fell 4-6, 6-1, 6-2 to Garrett Lane at the No. 3 slot.
In addition to Zimmer, Katten and Maxson also claimed wins over against Quinnipiac. Both came in straight sets.
Bucknell will return to action tomorrow at 5:30 p.m. to take on Chicago State.
