ORLANDO, Fla. - The Bucknell men's tennis team won their first matchup of the day in decisive fashion over Siena at the Fort Gatlin Recreation Complex Tuesday afternoon. The Bison rebounded from yesterday's loss to Monmouth by beating the Saints by the score of 7-0. The men's team lost the second match of the day to Northern Illinois, 6-1.
The men swept the singles action against Siena, with all six Bison tennis players winning in straight sets.
Josh Katten won his second consecutive singles match after beating Dylan Roberts of Siena 6-1, 6-2. Katten also won his doubles match with partner Kelly Morque over Matthew Funiciello and Darren Reisch, 8-7. With that doubles win Katten has now moved within three victories of Bucknell's top-10 all-time doubles victories. His record currently resides at 46-28.
Scott Bernstein and Octavio Canibe each returned to win their singles matches after the doubles partners lost earlier in the afternoon, 8-7. Bernstein battled for his victory in the No. 6 singles match, winning 6-2, 6-4 and Canibe rolled through Peter Collins in the No. 1 singles position, 6-0, 6-1.
Gregg Cohenca and Evan Zimmer won their No. 1 doubles match, 8-4. Both players sat out the singles matches and were given time to rest for the second meeting of the day against Northern Illinois.
In the men's team second match of the day they faced Northern Illinois and were defeated 6-1. After the earlier bout against Siena, the Bison didn't have the fresh legs that Northern Illinois brought to the court and the Huskies' quick play ultimately outdid Bucknell.
Cohenca and Canibe both played in three-set singles matches against their opponents. Cohenca lost to Roman Turtygin 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 in his No. 1 singles match and Canibe lost in the No. 3 slot to Axel Lagerlof, 5-7, 6-3, 6-3.
Katten won his third straight singles match in during the Spring Break week by earning the lone singles point for the Bison from Maksym Lagutin, 6-0, 6-3.
The men's tennis team has an off day Wednesday and will return to action in Orlando, Fla., Thursday against NJIT (9-4) at 11:30 a.m. in the Lake Cane Tennis Center and Quinnipiac (3-4) at 6:30 p.m. in Sanlando Park.
