Bucknell's Christian Treat Named Patriot League Men's Swimming and Diving Scholar-Athlete of the Year for Second Time

LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell junior Christian Treat (Evergreen, Colo./Clear Creek) was named the Patriot League Men's Swimming and Diving Scholar-Athlete of the Year, the league office announced on Monday. It is the second consecutive year Treat has earned the honor, and it marks the third straight year a Bison has been cited.
Additionally, Treat and senior teammates Thomas Brown (Ridgefield, Conn./Ridgefield), Taylor Harris (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Central) and Matthew Segar (Carmel, Ind./Carmel) were voted to the 10-person Academic All-Patriot League Men's Swimming and Diving Team. It is the second consecutive year Treat and Brown have been on the team, while it is the first career honors for both Harris and Segar.
Treat is the first Bison to win the Scholar-Athlete award two consecutive years. This is the eighth time overall a Bucknell student-athlete has been honored, following Jay Gross (1992), Scott Woodworth (1997), Alex Johnson (1999), Adam Freeman (2003, 2005) and Daniel Fletcher(2010).
A three-time All-Patriot League selection, Treat is just the third person to win back-to-back Scholar-Athlete awards, following Colgate's Greg Sobo (1993, 1994) and Lehigh's Dan Johnson (2008, 2009).
A First Team All-Patriot League choice this year, Treat had two runner-up showings at the Patriot League Championships in the 100 breast and 200 breast and he finished sixth in the 200 IM. Treat, who ranks second in school history in three events, has nine career top-10 showings at the Patriot League Championships.
Treat, this past weekend, helped Bucknell to a second-place team finish at the ECAC Championships. He posted third-place finishes in both the 100 and 200 breast and a fourth-place showing in the 200 IM.
Away from the pool, Treat is an animal behavior major with a 3.66 cumulative grade-point average who has been on the Dean's List four times. The scholarship and social chair of Phi Kappa Psi fraternity, Treat has been president of Bucknell's animal behavior club, a student-athlete leader in the Bison Leadership Academy and a student-athlete speaker at a Prospective Student Forum. He has spent plenty of time volunteering, serving as a swim instructor for the Lewisburg Community outreach Program, helping to clean up a local state park and with the Special Olympics.
A two-time Patriot League Academic Honor Roll member, Treat has also participated in Swim Across America to raise money for cancer research and in an AIDS walk/run. He has also served as Key Club president and won the Kiwanis Key Leader Service Award.
Like Treat, Brown is on the Academic All-Patriot League Team for a second consecutive year. An accounting major with a GPA north of 3.4, Brown finished fourth in the 100 back, fourth in the 200 back and seventh in the 200 IM at the Patriot League Championships en route to a First Team All-Patriot League selection, his third career All-League citation.
A two-time Patriot League Academic Honor Roll member, Brown ranks in the top 10 in school history in four events and holds the school record in the 200 back. He scored in three events at this past weekend's ECAC Championships, finishing sixth in both backstroke events and 16th in the 100 fly.
An accounting major with a GPA of 3.82, Harris earned Second Team All-Patriot League honors this year after finishing fifth in the 100 back, sixth in the 100 fly and 11th in the 50 free. He posted new program top-10 marks in all three events and now stands second to only Bucknell Athletics Hall of Famer Jim Harvey on the 100 fly ledger.
A two-time Patriot League Academic Honor Roll member, Harris posted a 4.0 GPA this past fall. He is involved with Bucknell's Dance Department, LGBT and he took part in the University's fall break diversity retreat. A Bucknell Orientation Assistant in 2010, Harris studied abroad in Granada, Spain, in the spring of 2011.
Harris posted three top-10 finishes at this past weekend's ECAC Championships.
Segar earned his first career Academic All-Patriot League nod after totaling 45 points at the league championships, ranking 12th in the Patriot League and third on the Bison, behind only Treat and Mike Nicholson. He is a computer science major with a 3.42 cumulative GPA who has been on the Dean's List and Patriot League Academic Honor Roll three times each. Segar posted a GPA of better than 3.7 this past fall.
A three-time All-Patriot League selection who has qualified for the U.S. Olympic Trials in the 200 free, Segar finished third in the 200 free, fourth in the 500 free and fifth in the 1,650 free at last week's PL Championships. He will graduate with the school record in the 200 free, and he ranks in the top 10 in program history in four other events. Segar is coming off his second career ECAC title after winning the 200 free at this past weekend's meet.
A member of a number of on-campus committees, Segar has performed a number of volunteer activities, including participating in an AIDS walk, cleaning up trails at a local state park, serving at a local food bank and participating in a Swim Across America fundraiser.
Now in its second year, the Academic All-Patriot League Team was added for all sports beginning in the 2010-11 season to honor additional student-athletes who excel both on and off the field. The Men's Swimming and Diving Academic All-Patriot League Team consists of 10 student-athletes. Voting for the Scholar-Athlete of the Year and the Academic All-Patriot League Team is conducted by the league's swimming and diving sports information directors, who cannot vote for their own student-athletes.
