OLEAN, N.Y. – Bucknell men's tennis split singles action with Niagara but could not pull out the team win after getting swept in doubles play at Olean, N.Y., on Friday evening. The Bison (2-2) fell by a score of 4-3 to open a weekend that will also pit them against St. Bonaventure tomorrow afternoon.
After falling behind early, Bucknell did its best to make up ground once singles play got underway. Gregg Cohenca, Josh Katten and Gregory Maxson each tallied wins, but that was as far as the Bison got. The Purple Eagles also claimed three wins in singles, giving them the slim edge in the final.
Cohenca had one of the closest matches to call of the day. Playing again at the No. 1 position, the senior won the first set 6-2 but dropped the second in a tiebreaker to Joseph Zelic. Cohenca regrouped in the final frame for a 6-3 win.
Cohenca now has a career singles record of 45-50. His 45 wins moves him into a tie for 13th all-time in program history. His 102 career combined victories also moves him into a tie for eighth at Bucknell.
Katten had an easier time of it at No. 3 singles. The junior got past Lorezn Schowjer in straight sets, 6-1, 6-4.
Earlier in the match, Bucknell fell in all three doubles matches by an identical score of 8-5 each time.
The Bison will take on St. Bonaventure at 3 p.m. tomorrow.
