Morgan Clinches 4-3 Victory for Bucknell Women's Tennis over Niagara

OLEAN, N.Y. – Bucknell women's tennis gathered its first win of the season, defeating Niagara 4-3 in Olean, N.Y., on Friday night. Elizabeth Morgan clinched the victory for the Bison (1-2) with a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 6 singles as the team began its run of three matches in three days.
Bucknell earned the first point of the day by taking two of three doubles matches. Elena Vidrascu and Lydia Colvin teamed up for an 8-6 win over Ashley Ta and Maria Ortiz at the No. 2 position. Jen Bush and Lauren Boone had a decidedly easier time at No. 3 with an 8-1 victory over Jenna McCune and Rachel Zilka.
Dumitrita Iepuras and Vidrascu later captured singles wins, each in three sets, but losses for the Bison at Nos. 4 and 5 left things up to Morgan. The sophomore secured the team victory by defeating McCune at love in both sets.
Iepuras sailed through her first set against Hilary Hansen at No. 1 singles, winning 6-1. Hansen came back in the second for a 6-3 win over her own to force a deciding third frame. The Bison senior earned her 102nd career win with a 6-4 score in the third.
Vidrascu also went three sets at the No. 2 singles position, but she followed a slightly different path than her elder teammate. The sophomore dropped the opening set 6-4 to Iva Celan. Vidrascu then took the final two sets both by a score of 6-3.
Three of the six singles matches went the distance. Also forcing a third set was Colvin against Ta at the third spot in the lineup. Colvin won the second set in a tiebreaker but could not hang on for the full comeback, falling 7-5 in the third.
Bucknell will be back in action tomorrow when it takes on St. Bonaventure in Olean. The match is set for 3 p.m.
